I do think it happened and doesn't really compare to Jussie lying to try to ignite some kind of riot so he could further his acting career.
I don't think it was worthy of the national guard either. So I guess that the real similarity is politicians grand standing on the incidents to play to their respective bases.

He was with the woman when a gang of about a dozen youths that included young men and women tried to assault him and his date next to their car. He didn't run to defend her but he was severely beaten and he saved her until the police showed up.

At this point, I see no reason to doubt the overall story about a group of kids attacking and trying to carjack Edward and his girlfriend and the arrival of the police ending the situation.

Incorrect on both counts. I’m not implying it was staged and the police were not called. Police report states officers on patrol spotted the disturbance and went to intervene.

I remember when it happened one of the theories for it being staged is he was trying to get more money from his contract with the show he was on at the time, and I guess thought this would help him get the contract he wanted.

Y'all will be pleased to know that the two people charged with unarmed carjacking have been properly dealt with and the troops can go home.
The 15-year-old boy and girl charged in the carjacking had been held until they appeared at a hearing Thursday before Judge Kendra Briggs, who allowed them to be released, the New York Post reported.
One of the teens was granted home confinement and the other was released to a youth shelter, multiple outlets reported. Conditions of their release include curfews and electronic monitoring.
That shit happens when teenagers too young to go to clubs or do adult things are wandering around at four o'clock in the morning. It's too bad the 19 year old Big Balls had some dire emergency that had him out at that time of night.

This is the aspect that can make this thread interesting (to me, anyway). In the eighties the right wing in America began to make use of what I would call the "useful anecdote" news story (sometimes distorted or even false, and increasingly false over time and the success of the tactic). Dozens of examples emerged back then, but one of the notable ones in terms of both political success and moral depravity is the "revolving door ad "against candidate Dukakis based on one case, implying he let a black murderer free and would have a revolving door to send them out in the communmity. Here's a refresher if needed:

The success of this boosted its use, it has become dynamic and constant in right wing media in America, and the insanity and ludicrous disconnection with reality always increasing. Immigrants as pet eating monsters was one of dozens of these last year.
One of the lanes of this that I previously took an observational interest in was science distortion and lies on Fox "News." They have done this "useful anecdote" tactic so many times with anti-climate stuff it's now uncountable, but the first one I examined is a classic case of what they do nonstop. For days on end Fox produced the big big story that science had discovered sea level rise was faked, and said that there was a science paper that proved it. It was in each newscast, over and over.I checked (with some time and effort) the source, a single paper published in something called "Earth Systems and Environment," which does not appear--at all-- on a list of the top 700 peer reviewed science journals in the world.
In fact, found the publication was from something called "King Abdulaziz University" and it just started operating a year before Fox "News" decided to use it as a source for the sea levels not rising story. This "university," which noted for engaging in fraudulent activity, is located in Saudi Arabia, a place comparable to the likes of Exxon and Koch industries in terms of a very strong desire of keeping oil profits rolling.
This is the kind of "useful anecdote" Fox "News" hunts down for it's huge news stories on "science."

there is no evidence that the young woman was the target. by all accounts, she was unharmed.
it was an attempted car jacking. it sounds like the young woman was in the vehicle with the doors locked. not sure why big balls didn't also get into the vehicle.

I'm not finesse but didn't read it as him saying the assault didn't happen. I think the larger point is that it is not a story worthy of national attention; certainly not worthy of being cited repeatedly by the President as justification for deploying the National Guard in DC.
