K&W cafeteria closing

Went a couple weeks ago with a 95 year old MawMaw . In Raleigh , east Raleigh?
There like 5 employees-not 25. I was shocked
Same ole good brown food

Candidly I'm surprised they lasted this long. These sorts of cafeteria places were still ubiquitous when I was growing up in the 90s but have been fading in popularity as their customer base aged, and I'm sure they got absolutely crushed in the pandemic. I have fond memories of going to K&W as a kid but it's just not really the kind of place most people want to go now, and it's probably always thrived on being a volume business, so probably best to say goodbye.

When I was growing up in the late 50s my family would take us to Sunday lunch at the S&W in Greensboro which was pretty much the same as the K&W which my family enjoyed in Chapel Hill for years.

good times and good food...

I wonder how much K&W is just Cracker Barrel 20-30 years earlier in the lifecycle of the restaurant?

Damn! Just ate at the one on Healy in WS last week for the first time in ages. Clearly seemed to be on borrowed time.

Another staple of my childhood and teen years gone. It was a regular Sunday after church lunch location. In fact our congregation's second Sunday service started at 10:30 instead of 11:00 and the joke was always so that we could beat everyone to K&W. Have some core memories of the line ladies yelling "slaw or tartar?" whenever I would order cod fish.

RIP, Kanes & Walkers

ROGAHs from Everett would descend on the K&W often, then stop by the grocery store nearby with everybody buying a case of something cheap then back the dorm for raucous fun watching etc.

Later, when palates improved we'd make our way to Bullock's for family style.
