I think it is fair to say that many Trump voters didn’t sign up for this kind of bullshit, but at the same time this local sheriff pretty clearly feels empowered by a lot of the MAGA rhetoric about opposing them being tantamount to treason.

There’s a lot of petty tyrants out there who likewise feel empowered by the might makes right, smite your enemies approach of the Trump Administration. They’ve always been out there but since the Civil Rights movement and the broader push for police accountability over the last 30+ years, the local tyrants have been somewhat restrained.

The Constitutional Sheriff movement was once a fringe pushback against the federal restraint over abuses by local law enforcement, but it and similar movements have taken deep root as local tyrant resistance to federalism.

Anyway, this story is both a symptom of the corrosion of Trump’s fight against the rule of law but also an eruption from a long festering infection of our local law enforcement with extreme, authoritarian concepts.

There was PLENTY of information out there that showed this is EXACTLY the kinda shit we would be dealing with if the mouth breathers dragged their knuckles to the voting booth and pulled the lever for Trump.

The problem is that those of us who shouted that stuff were lumped in with the lunatic fringe.

He voted for it. That he voted with ignorance or bigotry is of little consequence now.

Meanwhile, back on Earth One, we've all heard Trump say that the media printing negative stories about him should be illegal.

MAGA is and has always been fiercely opposed to permitting speech they don't like and it starts at the top.
 
I find it interesting that this egregious miscarriage of justice was carried out against someone who is not only a political pariah in his community but also neatly fits into the MAGA demographic. Older, white male from rural Tennessee who retired from a career in law enforcement. He even looks the MAGA part.

How dare he speak out against Dear Leader.
