Let’s all move to Canada

I would honestly lover to live in Vancouver (fully understanding how insanely expensive housing is there). But it's such a beautiful area and more temperate for Canada.

Anybody know what sort of hoops you would have to go through to buy property in Canada, as an American? This is not an "OMG I want to move out of the country" post, but seems like owning some property in southern Canada is a nice hedge if politics and/or global warming ever make living in the Southeast US less tenable. Or use it as a vacation home if long-term fears turn out to be unfounded.

If I had to live somewhere in Canada, I would probably choose somewhere in Ontario. I would prefer to live in a city and Ontario has many of Canada’s biggest cities. I would also prefer to live on the eastern side of the continent. It would be relatively close to our cottage in the NY Finger Lakes (closer than I am now), and relatively close to the many family members I have in upstate/western NY, including several in nearby Buffalo.

The one thing that would bother me is the cold. I can enjoy very cold weather in very small doses, but I prefer it not to be cold most of the time and love the weather I’m used to during springs and falls in Charlotte.
