A buddy of mine had a 401-k with a company that no longer exists. About 20 years ago. Thinks he had about 5k in there. He cannot remember the name of the company administered although he thought mutual of Omaha? Anyone know how to locate it?

I have used this site and it works. I found an old savings account in my wife's name in a town where we formerly lived with a bank we had accounts with. Initially, it was puzzling, but the memories soon came rolling back. My wife got about $300 or $400 out of the blue and decided to just save it. And, unfortunately, I also remembered her words from back then - "I'm just going to stick this money in a savings account and forget about it." I got way more enjoyment out of the "and forget about it" part than my wife did with the recovered money.

In NC if there is absolute zero activity on it for X years they have to turn it over to the state. And it's not that many years because I got a notice from a job I had less than 5 years ago they were gonna turn it over unless I called and said I wanted to keep it. It's probably on the NC unclaimed funds website if he lives in NC.
