Again. I-95 is most travelled intestate in us. The casino will be halfway between New York and Miami. These people will stop for a night. But we will see years away
I get that but I hope you get that would be a different business model than most other major casinos. Being a stopover point halfway to somewhere is not really the casino groove. Folks like that dont spend a lot of time at the machines. There are a couple in Kansas that are kind of that way but they also are in Kansas City and have a big draw of locals. We shall see but I've never thought an I95 casino was as much of a shoo-in as others seem to.

The casino won't attract travelers. It will attract locals. Presumably it will be somewhere near Fayetteville. You have roughly 4 million people within an hour and half drive, with virtually no competition within that geographical area (Danville, VA will get some of the RDU players). That kind of demographics would be very attractive to investors. I am sure they will have a large security force to address @wmheel1287's concerns.

The land is bought for the casino.. Ssouth of l95 in Lumberton, 45 miles from Fayetteville. Not sure putting a casino in the middle of one of the most impoverished regions in us is great plan if relying on locals. That is not the plan. We will see.

If this had happened 30 years ago--like Harrah's Casino in Cherokee--I think it would be a surer bet. Harrah's Casino in Cherokee draws on Charlotte and Atlanta. There are buses that take old folks to/from Charlotte/Cherokee every day. How the Lumbees play the I-95 card will be outcome determinative. This is NOT a "if you build it, they will come" situation. Cherokee was an exiting tourist destination before the casino was ever built. One option, would be to make the Lumbee Casino the focal point of an enormous outlet mall, i.e., build on a preexisting draw. Sort of a "Come for the bargains, spend the night for the shows at the casino." Just slapping up a casino beside I-95 without giving people another excuse to come is a recipe for failure. Having the casino as part of the largest outlet mall on the East Coast stands a better chance of success. Letting a Trump have anything to do with it guarntees failure.

Thats kind of what Im saying...they dont have those people. The location they are saying the casino will be has less than 1 million people within 90 mins. The big metros of Raleigh and Charlotte will be well outside of that and already have closer options that are established and branded with Harrahs and Caesars. The Lumbee are banking on the overnight traveler that Heel79 is referencing.

Do people still go out-of-their way to go to outlet malls? An outlet mall on I-95 in Robeson County?

Who is driving from the Northeast to Florida on I-95?
  • Canadians? Oops.
  • Elderly from MA, NY, NJ, PA, etc.
  • Well-off people are flying
Is Robeson County a halfway point? As all those elderly age is halfway important? Or do they go 1/3 and 2/3?

I absolutely agree with this theory. They dont get good enough year round weather to invest in a huge theme park and have it be a consistent draw. They have to find something that will make people stop and stay so that they will gamble. I do not know what that will be. There is just not enough juice to squeeze locally. Cherokee has plenty of local attraction draw. Lumberton does not. Danville has plenty of population draw (3 million people within 60 miles). Lumberton does not have that either. They have to find something. I dont think the overnight pitstop on a ling drive angle is a winner. Thats what Buc-ees is for.

Well that is not very bright. Maybe they can purchase some different land.

By "local," I don't mean 15 minute drive. In SoCal, almost all of the local casinos are a 90 minute drive from civilization (no one wanted the natives to live close back in the day).

But Lumberton is not quite as desirable. That is about 2.5 million within a 90 minute drive. You would get Raleigh and east within the footprint, but not much from South Carolina.

Honestly with the way the county and Tribe have turned red, I'm not really pulling for success.

Thanks for doing your part to fuck over the country, and the world, for a damn casino.

Hope it's a bust
Well I'm not Lumbee and I did not vote for Trump. But recognition is about way more than a casino. It will bring hundreds of millions of dollars to Robeson and surrounding counties for health care, education and economic development that theoretically at least should help people who have been victimized by systemic racism for generations. A casino will be a part of that. The tribe voted democratic faithfully forever and changed teams when trump promised he would get it done. I know plenty of Lumbee who loathe him and plenty that love him. But most if not all are thankful he gets this done although the statue of erected will be if thom Tillis I am told.

I wasn't talking to you with my "you."

I was talking to the tribe folks who sold out
