Myrtle could make an ass load themselves legalizing gambling but they tend to be really slow about vices. Like I remember when bars could only serve airplane bottles. Dumbest thing I've ever seen.
Pretty certain the airplane bottles were to prevent bars/restaurants from refilling fifths with bootleg rotgut booze.

I never thought of that but even if that was the rationale they were the only state in the country doing it. But South Carolina Republicans thought they were just smarter than everyone else like that.

For me the low point in pre-liquor by the drink North Carolina was when two SBI agents arrested a stewardess on a Piedmont Flight coming from out of state to land in Charlotte. The SBI agents waited until they believed they were in North Carolina "airspace," ordered a mixed drink on the plane, and arrested the stewardress when she served it. What an utter waste of resources. While simultaneous with this was all sorts of illegal stuff (gambling & liquor by the drink) at facilities serving the Pinehurst golf courses. The key difference was Piedmont Airlines wasn't greasing the pockets of legislative leaders.

And their grandsons now work for ICE.

That was always the craziest thing when going to a bar in South Carolina 20+ years ago. (It was exactly 20 years ago this past January 1 when SC finally moved away from the airplane bottles.)

I never knew that. That’s insane. That sounds even worse than the the stupid obscenity prosecutions that occurred in Charlotte back in the 1980s and very early-90s.

The experienced bartenders would ask people "you want that two ways/three ways" meaning two or three drinks because if someone ordered a concoction with a bunch of different spirts in it there would be too much alcohol for one drink, or leftovers from airplane botles of disproportionate ratios. Then they'd have to explain to people from more civilized parts of the world why it was necessary. Like what dude?? I just wanted a Long Island Iced Tea.

I am from that area and the fundamentalists were adamantly against liquor by the drink, but the laws allowed people to have a "locker" where they kept their own liquor on premises and could order a soft drink and add the liquor from their own stash. I'm pretty sure at my local country club the bartenders could pull the liquor from your locker and mix the drink, as long as they didn't actualy sell you the liquor. So people would load up their lockers at their favorite watering holes and get loaded paying for soft drinks. Somehow the fundamentlaists thought this was better.

Yeah, I remember that. Absolute insanity. Because my Dad had been an Officer during WW2--medically retired in the late 1940's because of how shot-up he was--my father could be a member of Officer's Club at Seymour Johnson AFB. And while my Mom didn't have a fancy house where she could entertain friends, she could take her friends up to the Seymore Johnston Officer's Club and they could order DRINKS FROM THE BAR! As such, my Mother voted against liquor by the drink because it would destroy the only social card she had to play.

Democrats such as segregationist Strom Thurmond ran the state in those days.

They became Republicans with the passage of the Civil Rights Act.

Corruption was a right of passage in South Carolina.

Those airplane bottles was to control an avenue of corruption.

Doesn’t mean rotgut wasn’t in those little bottles of Jack Daniels.
