Make the ACC championship? Have you lost your mind? We aren't fielding a D1 team. We are exquisitely bad and even a horrible ACC will not cover that up.
 
I don’t know what you consider “decent” but I feel like Duke qualifies. That game is usually competitive and the Blue Devils should have at least a punchers chance. State also steps up to play Carolina on the grid iron. It’s like the exact opposite of the basketball side of things. Not that any of you care about my opinion.

Every team we play for the remainder of the season has at least a “puncher’s chance” of beating us.

Thats what happens when you get into conference play with a mediocre at best team.
 
I think any semblance of an argument for Mack as a viable HC was gone after the team rolled over and quit @ State last season. That should have been the end of it, but now we’re forced to sit through a pointless lame duck season because Mack was too proud to call it quits and our admins and donors didn’t care enough to force the issue. Anyone with a brain could see it coming.

A power conference program giving up 70 at home to a team like JMU is a sign that the time is quitting on the coaches. Mack’s locker room quote about maybe stepping down if it would help the team and then backtracking is just twisting the knife and embarrassing the fans even more. Personally I’d rather see him shown the door now and at least try to field a respectable team for the rest of the season, but if he’s going to stay, the least he could do is shut the frick up with the all of the dramatic quotes and press conferences.
 
I think it's interesting that in this entire thread not a single person has mentioned what Mack's current salary cap is.

This reminds me of your typical government agency situation. An agency is screwing everything up and can't do anything right, and the leader is begging for more resources so they can improve, but nobody will allocate what he needs. Finally it gets so bad the public is screaming bloody murder and real problems are happening. They fire the head of the agency. The government brings in a powerful person's brother and gives him all the resources the last guy was asking for, the situation gets better, and they pat themselves on the back for solving the problem.

Whoever follows Mack, you better hope this university gives him the resources he needs to compete in today's landscape. Because if his name sounds something like John Bunting, Carl Torbush or Larry Fedora, and he doesn't have a blank check, we're fucked.

Face it, this is a team that has struggled against bad competition. If they had tried all those gimmicks against a well coached team, they would have lost by 7 TDs instead of 5.

Time will tell. JMU is 92-15 at football in the last 8 years, but dimwits like you say they lost everyone from last year and are suddenly no good. I don't really foresee some grand collapse to their run but time will tell. Face it, like everyone else here, you don't even follow football closely enough to know who they were before this thread.

Wait...are you asserting that Mack hasn't been given more resources than any prior UNC football coach? Dude walked into a brand new practice facility and has been given more $$$ to spend on staff than any UNC coach before him. It's directly his fault he spent it throwing bones to his coaching buddies instead of hiring successful coordinators and talent developers.

We may not have UGA level $$$ to dole out to the entire team, but Mack was given plenty of resources and some incredible home-grown talent, especially at QB, and we got NADA to show for it.

Ultimately what resources are about in college football is talent aggregation. Used to be you got there through facilities and some under the counter payments, now it’s through NIL, but the final goal is the same. The problem with your post is it implies that Mack was hamstrung due to a lack of resources, but for most of his tenure he has had well above average talent versus the teams he has played. Of course UNC has never played at the top end of college football in terms of commitment, but that isn’t what has held Mack back. Now that his coaching has been shown to be utterly lacking he can no longer attract talent at the level he was at the beginning of his tenure so it’s falling apart. Early on it was barely held together by superlative talent, particularly at the offensive skill positions but that’s over.

A conversation about UNC’s long term commitment to football and where we stand in the pecking order and if it even makes sense to try to compete in the current model is worthwhile, but that has almost nothing to do with Mack Brown’s failures.

Wash, rinse, repeat. It's the coaches fault. The current coach is an idiot and as soon as we fire Torbush, Bunting, Fedora, Brown the sleeping giant will awaken and will surely take us to the promised land.

Problem is, everyone in the last 40 years except Mack Brown has usually taken us to 3 wins. Regardless of whether it's time for him to go now, some of you really lack perspective on what reasonable expectations are for this program because you're too spoiled by basketball. An equivalent would be Clemson fans thinking they should be blue bloods in basketball. And everyone except themselves can see that they are absolutely crazy.

Clemson is a hell of a lot better at basketball than UNC is at football.

I agree with most of what you say but Mack Brown's failures at UNC amount to winning twice as much on average as any other coach has in my middle age lifetime.

I agree that most of his talent was in recruiting and now that you can do that with money, it's way less important. It is probably time to move on to someone who can actually coach games, provided we give him the resources to get players.

The general Mack bashing and saying we should have been this or that and he has been a failure has no rational basis. It's a bunch of entitled fanatics thinking this program should be something it never has been and very likely never will be. If we get that ringer head coach everyone seems to think we will finally get, do you even think we can keep him? Or will he stick around and get bitten by a tick?
 
1. Mack should have never been hired. It was mickey mouse from the start and no other school would have hired him in p4. It even started as a joke, he literally tried to hire a DC with alzheimer’s
2. There should have been a quick succession plan as Mack was already in his upper 60s
3. It’s been clear that Mack 2.0 was poorly coached from the jump, but definitely after he completely blew Sams last year, we should have cut the cord. After Drakes first year, we really should have. At that time, we could have attracted someone good like Glen Schumann
4. Now, he’s run us into the ground and done this embarrassing and pathetic pseudo quit thing where he’s manipulating 18-22 year olds. Fuck him

Yes.
Any UNC coach who has all his players, coaches, system, schemes and terminology in place and manages to oversee a 20 pt loss to J M freaking U while giving up 70 total points needs to go sooner than later. And I say that as a fan of Mack Brown at App St, UNC 1.0, Texas, in the broadcast booth and UNC 2.0 hiring.

Sorry, but I’m sick of hearing about the easy schedule. UNC is an average team playing a bunch of other average teams. It will probably shake out with a 6-6 or 7-5 record at best.

I don’t think any rational person thinks UNC football is some sleeping giant, or anything close to it. I just think people feel like we can do better than we have been doing. That’s pretty much it. We can do better than having a win % that hovers just over 50% over the course of several seasons. We can do better than letting other teams— non-elite teams nonetheless— score 70 points against us. There’s nothing acceptable about having a team score 70 points on you in a football game. And this team that just scored 70 on us was a team that just scored 13 points vs. Gardner-Webb, an FCS team.

Show me where I said Mack is an idiot? Great try to expand the scope of your argument to somehow make it more sympathetic to your own lack of perspective. Then you move on to projecting "some of you lack perspective" when the fact is you can't even offer a counter to the simple fact that Mack had more resources this go-around than any of his predecessors and has NADA to show for it.
