Make the ACC championship? Have you lost your mind? We aren't fielding a D1 team. We are exquisitely bad and even a horrible ACC will not cover that up.
Indeed. We just gave up 70 points - 53 in the first half! - to James Madison. And while there may be a debate on here about how good JMU is this year, I think it's more than safe to say that a P5 school with the talent we have shouldn't be giving up 53 first-half points to freaking JMU. IMO, we'll be lucky to win two more games this year, even with a weak schedule. Our defense just showed (again) that they are incapable of stopping anybody, our special teams play is unimpressive, and yet again as a team we seem as soft as tissue paper. And this year there is no Drake or Sam to bail us out of games.

I think it's interesting that in this entire thread not a single person has mentioned what Mack's current salary cap is.

This reminds me of your typical government agency situation. An agency is screwing everything up and can't do anything right, and the leader is begging for more resources so they can improve, but nobody will allocate what he needs. Finally it gets so bad the public is screaming bloody murder and real problems are happening. They fire the head of the agency. The government brings in a powerful person's brother and gives him all the resources the last guy was asking for, the situation gets better, and they pat themselves on the back for solving the problem.

Whoever follows Mack, you better hope this university gives him the resources he needs to compete in today's landscape. Because if his name sounds something like John Bunting, Carl Torbush or Larry Fedora, and he doesn't have a blank check, we're fucked.
Bold to call other people dimwits and then make a nonsensical comparison like this. Mack routinely loses to programs with far less funding and resources than UNC’s. He’s simply not a good coach anymore.

UNC's Brown takes blame but says no plans to resign after 70-50 loss

Mack Brown told ESPN on Saturday that he is not resigning after an emotional locker room scene with his players following North Carolina's embarrassing 70-50 loss to James Madison, which is in its third season as an FBS school.

Brown, a College Football Hall of Famer, said he told the players that it was his fault and that he would step away if he couldn't get things fixed. The 70 points were the most ever given up by the Tar Heels, who fell to 3-1.

"I'm not resigning. I'll be back at work Monday," Brown told ESPN.

Brown, 73, is in his sixth season at North Carolina. He told ESPN he was aware of some reports and that messages in emotional locker rooms can be misconstrued but was adamant that he is not stepping down.

Only Mack can fix this situation, according to Mack Brown.

Mack’s failings look like most of UNC football failings. His second run isn’t the outlier, his top 10 finishes were.

Seriously doubt that he can. But that espn story reads very differently than what folks on here are saying happened. Which is why I posted it.
The broader point is that Mack himself directly opened the can of worms. If you’re not going to step down then why would you even bring it up? Just makes an already messy situation even worse.

I don’t know what you consider “decent” but I feel like Duke qualifies. That game is usually competitive and the Blue Devils should have at least a punchers chance. State also steps up to play Carolina on the grid iron. It’s like the exact opposite of the basketball side of things. Not that any of you care about my opinion.
conference record last few years

2018 - 3-5
2019 - 3-5
2020 - 1-9
2021 - 0-8
2022 - 5-3
2023 - 4-4

Not decent IMO. Mediocre to bad to awful historically. Tiny fanbase and probably spends 60% on football what unc does. Maybe they will be good this year but as a program they are not much to talk about and rarely favored in a conference game. They have played us close the last two years for sure but the two years before that were beatings.

UNC football has a culture of mediocrity. I don’t understand why but it is what it is.
We have been a 7-5 program for over 100 years. We have had 34 head coaches over those years so don't expect that the 35th head coach will be the charm to make us a top 10 program.

My hope every year has been to beat the neighborhood ie. ncst, dook**,wake, ecu, and happy Appy, finish with a winning record, and go bowling. At this point a successful season would be getting wins over dook** ,ncst, and wake and go to another minor bowl

It’s sad that we strive to be nothing more than the tallest midget

I will say this about Mack 2.0: He is not as good as Mack 1.0, but he has been considerably better than Fedora, Bunting, and Torbush. He has probably been more successful than Butch Davis was during his 5-year tenure (if you’re counting the vacated wins as actually wins). I do think Butch was on the verge of putting something really good on the field and perhaps he may have had sustained success, but that never came to fruition due the scandals coming to light. Bad timing for Butch. In the current era, no one would think anything of all that went down with the football program.l while he was coach.

But just because the Mack 2.0 era has been better than what we had with any of the previous four coaches, it doesn’t mean we can’t aspire to do at least a little better. After all, the previous 20 years were a pretty low bar and had to be the worst 20-year stretch in UNC football history. Definitely way worse the the 20-year stretch before it.

I can’t stand the mentality that Mack being better than Torbush/Bunting/Fedora at the end somehow gives him a pass. Who gives a frick if he has technically has a winning % 1 or 2 points higher than the programs all time record? To me that’s such a nonsensical way to look at the situation.

The broader point is that Mack himself directly opened the can of worms. If you’re not going to step down then why would you even bring it up? Just makes an already messy situation even worse.
To me, there's a big difference between saying that you're going to do whatever you can and if it doesn't work then you'll leave, versus saying that you are leaving, hoping they'll say "no, stay."

I agree and the fact that Mack made the team console him and pump him up after such a thoroughly embarrassing loss is why he should be retired when he wakes up tomorrow morning, whether by his choice or the PTB’s.

Being better than Bunting and Torbush is meaningless. And is he really considerably better than Fedora? Seems to me their tenures are relatively similar. Decent results when they had good QB’s but with terrible defenses holding them back. Looks like we’re entering the end where Mack has no QB and it all falls apart. Sound familiar? Fedora’s best season was better than anything Mack has done as well, albeit marginally.

In my opinion Fedora and Mack 2.0 are almost exactly the same. Their record after 69 games is identical …41-28. Both have an ACC Championship game appearance. Both started off in the hole..Fedora had to manage the NCAA mess, Mack had to manage the fallout of the last two horrible Fedora season. Both gave up 70 points in a game. Both had horrible defensive play.

I guess, but why even bring it up at all? I just don’t see any benefit.

Fedora’s first 5 seasons and Mack 2.0’s first 5 season were just about on par, with Fedora’s best season being a little better than Mack 2.0’s best season. Fedora’s last two seasons were absolutely terrible though. Only slightly better than Mack 1.0’s first two seasons.
