March Madness - Sweet 16

Actually Black Sunday [March 11, 1979]. Both games were in Raleigh. The Quakers and Johnnies advanced to the East Regional in Greensboro [along with Rutgers and Syracuse] where there may have been 6,000 people in attendance for their Elite 8 matchup. It was the first year teams had been seeded in the tournament and we were the 1 seed with dook being the 2.

That Monday March 12 both Clemson and UVA lost in the NIT.
The only NCAA tournament game I ever went to
Sucked

Penn , St. John's, Rutgers, and Syracuse. Man, that really was an East Regional!

That's it.
And the next year 1980, Carolina also lost it's first game in the tournament. Back then it was considered the "2nd round" but it was indeed Carolina's first game in the tournament, just like in 1979. In essence, Carolina lost back-to-back "first round" games in '79-'80. But we were a #1 seed in '79 and a #4 seed in 1980. So really, those two tournament seasons were actually worse than these past two. Or at least more disappointing given our seeding. And back then, Dean had yet to win a Championship. The talk on the newly created ESPN and in the Raleigh and Charlotte papers was Dean can't win the big one. Yikes! Good thing there wasn't an internet and social media back then...

Looking forward to Houston-Illinois tomorrow. Feels like more of an elite 8 or even final 4 matchup

Illinois is somewhat of a matchup problem for Houston, unless they just get totally punked physically

Pulling for Houston though. Probably a bigger threat to take out duke should they have to

You should add 1978 to our first round losses as we lost to San Francisco out in Tempe. It was the first round of the last 32 team tourney and the last unseeded tourney as well. It was still 40 teams in 1980 [the year we lost by SEVENTEEN in 2OT to Texas A&M in Denton] and 48 teams in 1981 [the year we lost the natty to IU while starting our still-record 13 straight Sweet Sixteen appearances]

Duly noted. Two national title appearances in 1977 and 1981 sandwiching what is tantamount to consecutive first round losses. But I think the loss to A&M was a 48 team field. No? I think Black Sunday was a 40 team field. But I could be wrong. It’s often so.

Right you are about 1980's field size.

Crazy sports day here in Houston. Not only do we have the South Regional Sweet Sixteen at Toyota Center in downtown, but it is Opening Day for the Astros also in downtown 8 blocks away. AND it's the first day of the Texas Children's Houston Open in Memorial Park-5 miles from downtown.
