Marijuana use leads to much higher cardiovascular risk

Have they teased out whether it’s the THC itself or actually smoking leads to the increased risk? I’ve never smoked but was contemplating picking up a bottle of Nowadays for the beach next week.

Not this study. The article did mention a much smaller study that said young people that primarily used edibles also showed higher incidents of the beginning of cardiovascular disease.

That would tend to point to the THC or another ingredient in the marijuana to be the problem as opposed to the smoke but who knows.

I can't use the stuff at all in any form. I get super anxious and paranoid to the point of almost needing medical intervention. It just ain't for me.
This. I thought I’d try again recently so had some edibles in the evening with friends after a concert. Didn’t feel much and went to bed. Then… woke up at 5am and thought I was having a heart attack, a panic attack or had gotten covid. Was freaking the f out. After a spell (and some googling) I realized that I was still having a response to the edibles and had to ride it out. Never again. DO NOT understand how people enjoy this drug.

The pendulum of medical science seems to be swinging away from any amount of alcohol consumption too. I think a lot of people have hung their hats on the old "a couple of glasses of wine is good for you" theory but now most of the stuff I read is that no amount of alcohol is good for you and even small amounts can be detrimental. Time to switch to ketamine I guess...
Indeed. "Science Vs." podcast covered this in the March 30, 2023 episode, and that is what they reported, much to my disappointment.

I’m guessing they gave you too much thc. If I take too much I notice my heart starting to race. I’m only a 125 pound woman but I find 5-10 mg to be just right

That stinks.

"Using marijuana doubles the risk of dying from heart disease, according to a new analysis of pooled medical data involving 200 million people mostly between the ages of 19 and 59.

“What was particularly striking was that the concerned patients hospitalized for these disorders were young (and thus, not likely to have their clinical features due to tobacco smoking) and with no history of cardiovascular disorder or cardiovascular risk factors..."

This study didn't address the consumption method but smoking was probably by far the most prevelent. But according to a different study, edibles users were showing signs of early heart disease.

They also discussed potency as a possible reason for the increased risks. I'd like to see more studies to determine if adjusting potency or different consumption methods could reduce risk.

Just remember, a wise sage once said ... "Well, we're all going to die."

one vape hit before bed or one drink?
Why not both?

Thanks for that, Tiger. I learned a new word: Boffin. Australian slang for expert or someone with specialized knowledge..

I'm shocked that something fun is also bad for us. (Having said that, I don't really like it, but appreciate that many folks do)

so-called depression and anxiety are nothing more than a multi-billion dollar business

stay away from so-called mental health experts.....they do nothing but profit and keep you in that vicious cycle of treatment and poisonous drugs that do the real damage to one's brain chemistry.
That's terribly ignorant.

My guess is that you had way too high of a dose.

Gummies are difficult. The amount of THC can vary by a factor of 20 from what I have seen.

Yes and you can buy them with 250 mg. I would say it needs to be regulated but if they do it they will make it illegal.
