Also, there weren't exactly music videos or cultural icons who glorified settling disputes with Glock switches in the 1940s. Culture has changed as well. It used to be semi-acceptable to fight and settle your differences that way and then be done with it. Now we have a bunch of wusses who have been conditioned to just spray and pray whenever they feel like an opposing group has wronged them.
Just your way of blaming it on black people. White men carry out far more mass shootings than black men.

Good question

What if we actually adhered to the Amendment II of the Constitution and limited the right to bear arms to those in a "well regulated militia" ?
And passed a supporting law that anyone not participating in a well regulated militia had no right to bear arms ?

It would be a loss for the hunters who like to kill deer, doves, and ducks but then it would be a gain for those innocent animals so it would balance out.

It would be a loss for those who own guns "for protection" to defend against others, but if no civilian had a gun there would be no need to have a gun but the gain would be no gun deaths by 4yos, domestic violence, suicide , gangs , mass shootings by disaffected white kids and so it would all balance out.

Seems like a win-win solution to me. We finally adhere to the intent of Amendment II in the Constitution and over time reduce the gun deaths in America to zero.

The problem is that the criminals are already well-armed and would not be impacted at all by any legislation banning firearms. The result would be the law-abiding citizen is helpless to defend themselves against well-armed criminals. When seconds count, the police are minutes to hours away.

Not by the definition the linked twitter account is using. Going by the definition that the FBI uses, mass shootings are carried out in proportion to demographic representation.

Bonnie and Clyde, John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd, Al Capone, Meyer Lansky, etc. were all cultural icons. And the fascination with Westerns and Cowboy culture peaked during that era.

What was the homicide rate in the 1930s compared to today?

But they were white, though.
Maybe, but Italians and Jews weren’t “proper” whites at the time. There was enough there to other that, just like now, “keep your children away from them was a pull.” It’s all about attraction vs revulsion. And several of them were caught because they bragged about things publicly afterwards.

Here’s a data point….

Research by the criminologist Martin Wolfgang on Philadelphia’s homicide patterns from 1948 to 1952 reveals that only 33 per cent of the city’s homicides involved a firearm. Today, 91 per cent of homicides in Philadelphia feature a gun. Similarly, the national firearm homicide rate is 81 per cent. In addition, opinion polls traced the evolution over the second half of the 20th centuryfrom Americans buying guns primarily for hunting and recreation to buying them for self-protection against other people. Together, these findings reveal a sea change in US gun culture between the mid-20th century and the present day.”

Im glad someone said this before me. I am 100% sure that I wasn't influenced by video game and rap violence yet I grew up carrying fake guns and having shootouts in the yard.

It would not be just banning firearms. The law would include:

1 ) a 6 month opportunity to turn in ALL firearms to a designated firearm collection agency without paying a fee or be subject to a criminal charge

2 ) after the 6 month voluntary opportunity expires a national confiscation program would be implemented for 2 years whereby ALL guns confiscated from a firearm owner without criminal consequences but the owner would pay a fee to cover the cost of the confiscation

3 ) Anyone found in possession of a firearm after 2 years will have their firearm confiscated and be charged with a felony for the illegal possession of a firearm subject to a 10-20 years sentence in a Federal prison

So I'm guessing that armed criminals cause many fewer deaths to law-abiding citizens by guns than accidental shootings, domestic violence shootings, and "non-criminal " school mass shooters .

But the beauty of this law is that it addresses preventing the gun deaths by both criminal and "law abiding citizens"

I'm an old guy with a lot of gun experience. I've hunted all over North America and have shot competitively (in the distant past). I still bird hunt and own 20 guns. All my guns are kept unloaded in a secure gun room. Ammo is in a gun safe. I have no guns available for home defense even though I live in the big bad city. I feel we should make it illegal to sell or possess any semiautomatic handguns above .22 caliber. All long guns allowed above .22 would be bolt action, pump or lever action. All shotguns would be limited to 3 round capacity. The government should buy back any gun for $500. Anyone found possessing an illegal gun after six months grace period would face 5 years in prison. If you're scared you cane pack a .38 revolver or defend your home with a pump 12 gauge and buckshot. I think this would greatly reduce mass shootings and make all of us safer in the long run. I doubt any criminals would be packing glocks after a few arrests. Why do you think they avoid fully automatic weapons?

When I was growing up the gun violence was mostly featured in westerns. Gunsmoke, The Rifleman, Have Gun Will Travel, Rawhide, Laredo, Tales of Wells Fargo, Paladin, Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, and The Lone Ranger were some of the westerns that seemed to focus more on criminals and violence. These were different (more like modern cop/detective shows) than westerns that seemed more concerned with character development and everyday life such as Bonanza, The Big Valley, and The High Chaparral. Then there were westerns that leaned more into comedy like Maverick and Sugarfoot. But they all featured significant gunplay. It was a rare episode when no one was shot.

“In 2021, the US witnessed its highest number of gun deaths ever and, in 2023, its deadliest year for mass shootings. Alarming new trends include the rise of ghost guns – homemade guns made from unserialised parts, making them difficult to trace and regulate – and the increasing prevalence of military-grade automatic weapons in civilian hands. Gun ownership is only increasing, with one in five US households having purchased a gun during the COVID-19pandemic, and new gun owners diversifying to include more women and people of colour. My friend Charles, a street outreach worker in Chicago who works with violence-involved youth, aptly summarised the situation: ‘The answer to more guns is more guns.’

This cycle of guns begetting more guns risks becoming the norm, unless there is concerted state action to reverse the trend. Research shows that state intervention to restrict gun availability can make a significant difference. By the 1990s, unprecedented crime rates prompted many US states to adopt gun restrictions that resulted in a substantial reduction in gun availability and saved tens of thousands of lives. Moreover, mass shootings in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom motivated their governments to implement commonsense gun regulations, including bans on automatic weapons and requirements for licensing and registration. The success of these interventions offers hope that the current situation is not immutable.”

Why not just skip to step 3 with the language that I added? You can do that today with no change to any existing laws required. Boom, criminals are magically disarmed and no law-abiding citizens have their rights infringed upon. Easy, right?

So you want criminals to be able to carry Glocks with 17 round magazines, while Suzie with a restraining order against her violent ex only has 6 shots from her .38 revolver to defend herself? Something tells me that is not going to fly.

Not with your attitude
