New Hanover High-the old classic Wilmington school-has had an ROTC club since forever
I would consider ROTC to be different than a straight "rifle club". ROTC has a bigger purpose where guns are simply one part/tool of the activities.

You grew up in NY? I didn't know that.

We didn't have that in NC where I grew up. Probably because they thought we had enough access to guns in our daily lives and the school didn't need to offer that opportunity.
Moved to Raleigh in middle of 10th grade. most of my life to that point was growing up in cow country NY.

they still had the rifle club as of 2000 it seems.

For his Eagle project, Ruiz incorporated two of his major interests - helping those less fortunate and rifle shooting. His project, "Shoot for Food," was a rifle competition that collected nonperishable foods for the Montgomery Food Pantry. The entrance fee for the competitors was a donated bag of food. More than 23 bags of nonperishable items were collected.

The event, hosted by the Walden Sportsmen's Club, was such a success, and will be repeated this year and incorporated into the club's youth program.

Ruiz is a member of the Minisink Valley Varsity Rifle Team and has participated in the New York State Empire Games for the past three years. He holds the National Rifle Association's distinguished expert rank. He is also an apprentice instructor for the NRA.

We apparently had an indoor range at one point (maybe still do?) :

1969 – 1970

Joe Lilly was our first “fiscal year” President during 1969 – 1970, This year saw our first support of the Minisink Valley Rifle Club. We built their indoor range and provided basic equipment. Each year saw a strengthening of our on-going support programs.

We talk a good deal about the long-term effects on the current college-age generation from having spent some very formative years enveloped by the pandemic...in lockdown.

I suspect that for a great many of them that the very real threat of being shot while attending school (for every actual shooting how many false alarm lockdowns have happened anyway) is at least as salient of a negative life-long impression.

The "other" lockdown.

Shooter dead, 2 other students hospitalized after shooting at Colorado high school: Sheriff

The shooter had a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the sheriff's office said.

“… Kelley said she could not provide any other details about the suspected shooter, including the suspect's age or gender.

"I don't know if our suspect is even old enough to drive," Kelley said.

She said authorities were seeking a warrant for the student's home and locker.

The sheriff's office said the suspect was armed with a revolver handgun.…”

He rode the bus to school … he is “radicalized by some extremist network …” details to follow. He brought a lot of ammo and continued to reload, very lucky so few students were injured.

Multiple crime scenes inside and outside school, so sounds like kid was trying to shoot many more kids. They have not figured out who owns the gun yet. The suspect’s gun was fired “a lot” — fired multiple times, shot out windows etc. The school has security footage.

The SRO is on medical leave and the substitute SRO got dispatched away from school for an accident ahead of shooting, so no SRO on campus at time of shooting.

A lefty I’m sure.

Several HBCUs across Virginia and the South faced serious disruption on September 11, 2025, after potential threats forced lockdowns and closures. Virginia State University and Hampton University were the first to act. By the afternoon, Southern University, Bethune-Cookman University, and Alabama State University had also moved to secure their campuses.
