So we are literally going to have as the AG a pedophile who was 3 days away from being outed by the House Ethics Committee? A guy whose record would preclude him from being hired as a Junior Prosecutor is going to run the show?
Yes. And in many ways, he's not even close to being the worst or most dangerous appointment.

I'll be shocked if Thune or more than 1 or 2 GOP Senators actually stand up and oppose Trump on this. Lindsey Graham was already excusing voting for him this morning by saying that Trump won the election and has a mandate so basically the Senate should let him name who he wants to these positions. If Trump really wants him, he'll get him, imo.
Here is Sen Bill Hagerty (R-TN) adamantly defending that shitbird Gaetz on Fox - and as I type this, he's doing the same thing on MSNBC to Andrea Mitchell.

I was taking notes on what he was actually saying as he said it just now, and he's dropped all the same Pub talking points: Biden Crime family, Hunter Biden Laptop (x5), Hunter Biden corruption, Weaponization of Biden's DOJ (even tho it's the same one indicted Hunter), "we shouldn't oppose anything President Trump wants to do as he now has a historically large mandate from the American Public and we have a duty to fulfill it," wokeness is the ultimate enemy, stop focusing on pronouns and genders, Democrat Party, Democrat Party obstructionists in the Senate. Mitchell didn't push back much, but she's on her way out.

Where I'm going with this is, this guy is emblematic of what we should expect from the other passengers on the Trump train, and Gaetz has a good chance of being confirmed.

Good lord. So how is that different from any president? They all won their elections so they all have a mandate.

The only logical conclusions that could be drawn from this are that 1) Graham is just a hypocritical partisan hack or 2) he thinks the framers were wrong when they put the confirmation process in the constitution.

Of course we all know which choice applies.
Yup. Obama won his election, so why wasn’t the Senate deferential on his SCOTUS pick?

Let them burn it all down, then. All in the name of sticking it to the dems. Fine. When our country is in shambles, there will be only themselves to blame. This is what America voted for. Let them have it. Fuck 'em. I'll be watching from afar. With a beer and a big ol' bucket of popcorn.

Ya'll quit saying this... because I can easily be persuaded to agree

So here's my idea, and this assumes a confirmation hearing, which there's a good chance won't happen because Trump will just recess appoint.

Senate Dems show up to the Judiciary Committee hearing with a polygraph machine and a qualified FBI operator.

Cory Booker announces that the Dems request that Gaetz agree to answer four questions on the record and on video while connected to the machine. The questions will be:

(1) Did you have sex with the woman known as "A.B." when she was 17 years old, and therefore under the age of consent in Florida?
(2) Did you pay money to A.B. when she was 17 with the expectation she would travel with you across state lines?
(3) Did you brag to your colleagues on the House floor about having sex with young women, as previously alleged by now-Senator Mullin?
(4) Did you ask President Trump for a pardon before he left office in 2020 or 2021?

Gaetz will of course refuse, at which point Booker asks how he can expect the Senate to confirm him to head the agency that administers polygraph exams to ordinary Americans, when he won't agree to the same exam regarding credible allegations against him?

Boil that down to a 30-second ad and spend whatever it takes to broadcast it all over the country through March Madness.

Sadly, people won't care. The ones that do already oppose Trump. People elected a dangerous man with a criminal record who doesn't hide anything

John Cornyn just did his best Trump impression of, "I don't really know him/the campaign hired him/he was a coffee boy" when asked about Gaetz and the possibility he will or won't confirm him.

Congrats to Matt Gaetz, our next Atty General!

This is kinda where I am. I don’t want innocent people to suffer, but anyone that voted for Trump or withheld their vote from Harris for whatever reason? Yeah…fuck ‘em. I wish them nothing but hardship and misery the next four years.

Gen Z kids that voted for Trump? Enjoy scraping by and never having a chance to own a house, assholes.

Latino men that voted for Trump? Enjoy being deported or watching a close friend or family member go through it. Stephen Miller and Donald Trump don’t want you here, whether you are here legally or not. As for the Cubans: You’re concerned about communism, so you elect an authoritarian who wants complete control over your lives. Way to think it through.

Middle class, pro-choice white women that didn’t sprint to the ballot box to vote for Kamala simply because their state doesn’t have a draconian anti-abortion law in effect? You selfish fucking assholes. Enjoy your little pocket of safety…for now. Let’s see how much you enjoy it when Trump and the Project 2025 gestapo start looking for ways to nationally ban abortions. Enjoy your new overlord, the manosphere.

Black men who voted for Trump? You macho sellouts couldn’t stomach the thought of a woman in charge, so instead you vote for the most feeble, beta male cuck imaginable. Putin and any other dictator will walk all over him. But hey, at least he’s not a weak woman, right? Fuck you guys and your BS male bravado. Forty years ago, Donald Trump wouldn’t have allowed you to rent one of his properties, and now you’re willing to grovel at his feet. Let’s see how much “better” your lives are in four years.

And last, but definitely least…the hardcore MAGA chuds. The ones who voted for him in 2016 despite all the warning signs, Hollywood access tapes admitting sex crimes, and public assault on decency. Then they voted for him again in 2020, despite kids in cages, an impeachment for election tampering, a devalued American reputation worldwide, and a Covid response that was so botched that hundreds of thousands of U.S. citizens died. And then, to complete the Trifecta of Stupid, they vote for him a THIRD time, even after an attempted violent coup against our government because he refused to abdicate power, a 400 page public memo called Project 2025 clearly outlining their goal to turn our country into a theocratic autocracy, and increasingly bizarre and violent rhetoric by their candidate on the campaign trail, including fantasizing about Liz Cheney in front of a firing squad, wanting members of the MSM shot, and longing for the days when political enemies could be decapitated in public.

You voted for all of this for no other reason to own the libs. Because the thought of admitting you were wrong must be as foreign to you as dental hygiene and a college degree. I hope all of you suffer. When you need that government assistance because your low-paying job at the plant isn’t enough to buy groceries due to the tariff-hiked inflation, there won’t be any assistance for you to have because Trump and the Republicans gutted those social programs too. Enjoy starvation, fuckers. At least you got to own the libs.

What do you think was the intent of this nomination?

Some theories I've thought of.

  1. It is just Trump trolling the DOJ and the left.
  2. Trump identifies with Gaetz, has no problem with his severe moral and ethical flaws, and simply wants him as leader of the DOJ.
  3. Trump is planning on doing terrible things and has vetted Gaetz and knows he is one of the few who would follow through with these things.
  4. This is a loyalty test for senators. If they confirm Gaetz, that is a signal to Trump that he can do anything he wants and definitely a signal that he could not be impeached.
I would add:

5. The overton window

If the Gaetz nomination collapses, he potentially makes the next nominee seem much more reasonable by comparison even if they are merely "less terrible."

Yup. Obama won his election, so why wasn’t the Senate deferential on his SCOTUS pick?
Well, he won the election 3.5 years before that. His period for deference had expired. Now that applies only to democratic presidents.

You have to give them credit. They learned their lesson. The next time in an election year, they picked a justice the latest in an election year ever.
