Of course the ultimate defense against trump is for those organizations to just report the truth and leave their political agendas to influence elections out of their reporting. 60 minutes should absolutely be fined and have their license placed on probation.
For what?

To be clear, I have no objections to a documentary about a First Lady. Just noting that Bezos may be currying favor with the incoming Administration (or not) during the current term — and he also owns the Washington Post.

But political/media deals are not so uncommon. Netflix inked a media deal with the Obamas after they left office, for instance. And there is an entire book publishing/political nexus out there (which is how Joe Biden made money in the four years he was out of office).

On a related note:

Director Brett Ratner, marginalized after ‘#MeToo’ allegations, will direct Melania Trump documentary

“… The director and producer Brett Ratner, forced out of Hollywood at the peak of the #MeToo movement, will direct a documentary about First Lady Melania Trump for Amazon, the studio confirmed Sunday.

The move is both a warm embrace by the ecommerce giant for the incoming administration and a dramatic return for Ratner, the director of X-Men: The Last Stand and the Rush Hour movies.

One person who spoke to Semafor said they’d been surprised that Ratner, who reportedly lives in Israel now, had recently been seen at Mar-a-Lago. Last year, he and US President-elect Donald Trump were reportedly among the guests at the wedding of the son of businessman Al Malnik, who is close to Ratner.

Amazon didn’t immediately respond to an inquiry as to whether the Trump family or organization is being compensated for participating in the film. …”

Sounds like a short boring film. I wonder if they will include the photos.

“… Well, if you ask me, readers deserve more than this:

Democrats said the president was the political victim of a global trend emerging from the pandemic. Republicans pointed to his policies, and one piece of legislation in particular, the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, saying it poured gasoline on the smoldering embers of post-pandemic inflation.
OK, Democrats say one thing, Republicans say another. Views differ on shape of planet. But what are the facts? Shouldn’t readers at least be told that cumulative inflation since the start of the pandemic has been pretty much the same in all advanced countries, which sure seems to support the Democratic narrative that Biden’s policies weren’t responsible?

So I guess Bezos has decided that Democracy Doesn't Need to Die in Darkness, he'll just embrace its demise in broad daylight, and on bended knee. So much for the once great and proud WaPo.

ETA: At this point it's a real question that needs to be asked - is there a single major news media outlet left that is willing to stand up to Trump and Musk and not do their bidding and/or slant their reporting to their favor? The LA Times and WaPo are clearly shifting to the right, the NY Times hasn't been willing to stand up to him in eight years, MSNBC's top two stars traveled to Mar-a-Lago after the election for what certainly looked like a preemptive surrender, and CNN has a right-winger as their top news director. And ABC paid millions to Trump in a lawsuit that they likely would have won and humiliated their top news star George Stephanopoulos in the process. It's not looking good, that's for sure.

There’s not one I trust, implicitly. It really is time to support independent journos and syndicates.

Pro Publica?

Have had an annual digital subscription to the WaPo since February 2018. Got my renewal email reminder over the weekend and canceled this morning.

Of course, I had to click through at least 5 "are you really sure" screens before I could finally confirm I really was sure. When presented with a screen listing 12 reasons for canceling with the 12th being "other," that is the one I clicked because they didn't offer me "Your owner is a fascist-supporting piece of shit."
