“… Well, if you ask me, readers deserve more than this:

Democrats said the president was the political victim of a global trend emerging from the pandemic. Republicans pointed to his policies, and one piece of legislation in particular, the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, saying it poured gasoline on the smoldering embers of post-pandemic inflation.
OK, Democrats say one thing, Republicans say another. Views differ on shape of planet. But what are the facts? Shouldn’t readers at least be told that cumulative inflation since the start of the pandemic has been pretty much the same in all advanced countries, which sure seems to support the Democratic narrative that Biden’s policies weren’t responsible?

So I guess Bezos has decided that Democracy Doesn't Need to Die in Darkness, he'll just embrace its demise in broad daylight, and on bended knee. So much for the once great and proud WaPo.

ETA: At this point it's a real question that needs to be asked - is there a single major news media outlet left that is willing to stand up to Trump and Musk and not do their bidding and/or slant their reporting to their favor? The LA Times and WaPo are clearly shifting to the right, the NY Times hasn't been willing to stand up to him in eight years, MSNBC's top two stars traveled to Mar-a-Lago after the election for what certainly looked like a preemptive surrender, and CNN has a right-winger as their top news director. And ABC paid millions to Trump in a lawsuit that they likely would have won and humiliated their top news star George Stephanopoulos in the process. It's not looking good, that's for sure.

Pro Publica?

Have had an annual digital subscription to the WaPo since February 2018. Got my renewal email reminder over the weekend and canceled this morning.

Of course, I had to click through at least 5 "are you really sure" screens before I could finally confirm I really was sure. When presented with a screen listing 12 reasons for canceling with the 12th being "other," that is the one I clicked because they didn't offer me "Your owner is a fascist-supporting piece of shit."

We're at about Stage 6 of 10 in the Orbanization of America. Both mainstream and social media have pretty much capitulated without a fight. The next things to look for will be:

1. Attempts to exert federal control over universities, starting with the proposal to levy substantial taxes on endowments.
2. Race-based quotas for legal immigration.
3. Increased rhetoric around leaving NATO and entering into new non-Euro-based military partnerships.
4. Replacement of military leadership with Trump loyalists.

I'll be very surprised if we don't see all of those within the next year.

They don't call him Zuck the Cuck for nothing. Total genuflection from that humanoid without even the pretense of a backbone.

Agreed. It's all happening much faster than I anticipated. I mean, Trump isn't even in office yet, and the media and America's oligarchs have already bent the knee.

Honestly, those who can leave probably ought to be making plans. Things happen slowly, till they don't.

With China and Russia facing enormous demographic and economic challenges, we had a chance to cement America's status as the world's singular hegemon for decades to come. We could have laid out the path to a new era of peace, prosperity, equality and freedom. It was right there for the taking.

Instead, we decided to become Hungary. Which is just behind St. Kitts and Nevis in GDP per capita. Nice job, Republicans.

I'll rephrase from MAGA's perspective.

1. Condition continued federal support of universities with eradication antisemitism on campus (including teachings), guarantees of free speech on campus (no "hate speech" codes) and ending discrimination in admissions. Reasonable taxation of endowments unless endowments used to reduce tuition costs for students.
2. Skill-based consideration for legal immigration.
3. Continued efforts to have NATO members increase defense spending to at least 2% of their GDP (only 23 out of 31 are in compliance).
4. Replace woke political generals with fighting generals.

Doesn't sound so bad to me.
