“Ballance and McCaughan launched Merge Records in 1989 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, at about the same time they launched their band Superchunk. Since then, the label has built a catalog that includes Neutral Milk Hotel, Lambchop, The Magnetic Fields, The Clean, and Waxahatchee.

It has also released albums from the likes of Caribou, Fruit Bats and Destroyer, and introduced the world to M(h)aol, Friendship and Case Oats.

“IT WAS NEVER MY GOAL TO START A RECORD LABEL WHEN I WAS 21 AND RUN IT FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. I HAVE BEEN DOING THIS FOR 36 YEARS NOW. LIFE IS SHORT.”

LAURA BALLANCE, MERGE RECORDS”

I remember in 1994 buying the Merge compilation album, 5 Rows of Teeth, which celebrated Merfe’s five-year anniversary. I bought it on cassette, and I remember thinking it was crazy that Merge had been around for what at the time I considered to be so long.

Boy, the Arcade Fire is really toxic these days that they can't even get a Merge mention.

Thought the same thing when I read the list of acts mentioned. They were the most successful act Merge has had. But they did get a spot on the last episode of SNL of this past season.
