The biggest improvement in the last few games seems to have come from Withers. He has always had the talent. It's his basketball IQ and effort that has been lacking for years.

Helps when you actually see the floor for more than 5 mins

Wasn't playing meaningful mins for an entire month. As the team was playing some of its worst, mind you

A shame it took going down by 30 to duke to make the switch but at least we are there now

Always glad to win and we did what we needed to do. Miami may be the worst team we played all year, they really are just playing out the string right now.

American is 70 slots behind Miami on KenPom, and when Cleveland is playing, Miami is about equal to NC State (who is also playing out the string, except against Wake).

La Salle, Campbell, Elon and Hawaii are all pretty terrible, too.

Withers is 18-29 (62%) from 3 in the calendar year 😂 He's what.. 3-4 now on step back 3s? Don't recall him even taking one those before the latest stretch

Not that anyone expected the shooting, but there's no defending the inexplicable drop in usage in Jan and the start of Feb. Similar thing happened last season, as the team struggled through its worst stretch of ACC play

4 mins @ NCST 73-71 W
6 mins vs STAN 72-71 L
10 mins vs WAKE 67-66 L
3 mins vs BC 102-96 W
3 mins @ PITT 73-65 L
6 mins vs PITT 67-66 W

Which means he was 7-23 before this hot streak. That and some really bad turnovers at key times don't earn you minutes automatically. I'm glad he has come around but it's that he's come around more than that he was stifled.

I watch the games ,too, but not the practices. I'm assuming that, like with Dean and Roy, that's where the players earn their time.

Forgot he was the only player not shooting well and committing turnovers. Sadly, 30% is STILL better than most of the roster

So he was practicing good to start the year, stopped practicing good, and started practicing good again?

Last year is what it is, HD figured out a solid role for Withers and ended up sticking with it down the stretch (literally). This year working with absolutely nobody at the 4, going away from the one player who has shown he can contribute at the position, is hard to explain

I don't mind experimenting with Drake at the 4 at all but it was fairly clear early on that lineups with Drake at the 3 were better

The best thing is that Withers seems to have become, through his changes, or the coaches', but most likely both, one of the pieces that was missing. I'm so thrilled for him and the team.

Now let's fix the efense (no D).

This is a great point.

Fans often think that when a player starts performing better in games they would have always performed that way if they had just been allowed to play more.

When many times the improvements come from working on things in practice and applying the things the coaches are preaching.

Over Withers 5 CBB seasons he’s been up and down but rarely a guy who could be counted on consistently. Maybe a light bulb went off or maybe he’s just on a good run. Hopefully he stays “on” because his size and athleticism is sorely needed.

THIS 1,000 TIMES

You’ve just described every player on the roster who plays the 4 or the 5 (and more than that, if we’re being honest)

I think the results speaks for themselves. While Withers wasn’t off to a blazing start to the season, neither was anyone else at his position

Maybe it was the pressure to get the guards so many minutes. Whatever it was, I’m glad we’re past it

Or maybe that Trimble seriously was outplaying everyone else by the time we got to Hawaii and Cadeau and RJ the most successful pairing in the backcourt at that time.

Short memories and result merchanting don't get it.

So “the pressure to play all the guards” (with Drake)

Valid excuse, for a while. Not until the second week of February

Tyson was expected to be showing out from the get-go.
Yeah and RJ.

I think the biggest problem with our development was how front loaded our schedule was. The portal rules let some teams get really good fast. I'm not sure we expected what we got. We just never got our balance as a team.

He was playing 20-25 minutes per game early on. He was giving us nothing, other than the Kansas game. He was making stupid plays, fouling too much, committing TOs, terrible shot selection. There's a reason his PT went down. In the 20 games following the American game, he had 3 assists against 17 TOs.
