Yes. Non-spenders have very little chance. Many teams have shown it is very hard to "buy a pennant" . But it certainly seems like the odds of winning a pennant with a low salary cap presents almost certain doom Go Reds-Go Brewers
It's worse than that, I think. Because the playoffs are so random, merely making it into the playoffs gives a meaningful non-zero likelihood of winning a WS. And there are a couple of divisions, the centrals, where basically nobody spends any money. So a team like KC can get in by outperforming other non-spending teams, and then go on a run.One of my local radio stations did a piece on this last week. The myth that payroll doesn't matter is wrong. I think it was over the last 15 or 20 years, the data shows that unless you're in the top half of payroll, you don't win a WS.
But not every owner has the market that provides local TV revenue like the Yankees or Dodgers.Teams willing to spend should do better. Every owner has that option.
The thing that lingers is that it was well within reach, but for the massive amount of walks and LOB.Pain.
But a wonderful season…
They schedule as if the LCS’s are going to go 7 which would have put the ALCS ending Tuesday. So, now a long 5 day wait until the start of the WS, MLB you can GFY . . !
That’s true but I don’t have a ton of sympathy for billionaires who won’t reach into their own pockets. But not every owner has the market that provides local TV revenue like the Yankees or Dodgers.
Payroll is most important in overcoming adversity with organizational depth. If a front line pitcher goes down on a wealthy team, they just plug in another established pitcher. If Shane Bieber goes down the first month of the season, Cleveland brings someone up from Triple A. I suppose Dolan could make a trade or sign someone, but small market teams don't have the revenue to make the same moves as big market teams, so any such move comes out of his pocket.
There is a difference in a willingness to spend vs the ability to spend.
Not really any more with TV contracts. They schedule as if the LCS’s are going to go 7 which would have put the ALCS ending Tuesday.
They could have pushed game 1 to Thursday I suppose.
Not really any more with TV contracts.
And while I know nothing about it, I would imagine MLB has some sort of pre-arranged lodging blocks for dates certain in cities of possible postseason teams.
