Hey Cali fans, I'm heading west for the last series of the A's in the Coliseum and Oakland. If any board members are interested in breaking bread and the fourth wall, give me a shout, or better yet, shoot me a message.

The Guardians just clinched a postseason spot with a 10th inning walk off against the Twins. I read earlier are ten pitchers in MLB with an ERA under 2 (with a minimum of 50 innings pitched) and five of them are Guardians.
My butcher (Left Bank Butchery in Saxapahaw, whole animal butchery; great place!) is from Cleveland…..relatively young guy (35-40)……..he’s JACKED that Cleveland is in the playoffs AND he hates the “Guardians” name.

He’s probably also salty they dumped Chief Wahoo. Is he really angry about the “Guardians” name or is he simply angry the team was renamed at all?

And with the Royals loss last night, the Guards clinched the AL Central title. Now they will be battling the Yankees for the top seed in the AL playoffs.

He was hoping they’d pay the University of Richmond to gain the ability to use Spiders.

He was good with changing from Indians. He just doesn’t like “Guardians.”

I preferred Spiders as well. Why would they need to pay Richmond to use the name? My high school is the Spiders, would they have to pay Concord High as well? Do the Detroit Tigers have to pay Princeton or Mizzou to use the Tigers name? I don’t think you can copyright the name of a common animal. I’m sure Richmond copyrighted “Richmond Spiders” but I don’t see how they could keep another team from being the Spiders any more than Baylor or Chicago could prohibit a team from using the Bears mascot.

I don’t remember the details.

His brother is in the Guardians front office - specifically in marketing. When the name change was happening, he relayed what his brother told him and “Spiders” was a non-starter due to trademark issues.

All my Cleveland kin (what's left) understood a name change but despise Guardians. On one of my aunt's gravestone my cousin had "Lifelong Indians Fan" etched into it.

Braves and muts likely to be rained out tonight or tomorrow or both, interesting considering the importance of the games.

I guess it depends on the trademark or something.

I recall the Charlotte Hornets paid ( or forced) the Greensboro Hornets minor league baseball team to change there name to the Bats, when the NBA granted them the team.

The Mets and Braves might benefit from a mutual agreement to split the two games tomorrow (to limit wasted pitchers and playing time). I mean, of course they won’t do that, but on paper, if this were just a strategy game, it would make sense.

If the Braves win the first game and secure their WC spot, they probably won't go very hard in game 2 since they are locked in with the Padres with 1 win or 2. And I'm pretty sure that 2 wins doesn't change any seeding for them all the way through the World Series if they made it that far.

I'm still in disbelief that my Royals won 86 games this year and made it into the playoffs after only winning 56 game last year. Think I read that it was the 6th biggest single season win gain in the divisional era.

Your Royals are on the opposite side of the AL bracket from my Guards. Their path is tough….the Orioles, Yankees, then likely the Guardians or Astros ( I don’t think the Tigers make it to the ALCS) but anybody else can.
