This is a great graphic. Really makes it clear they aren't 'flying to the moon' they are flying to where the moon will be. The math involved is crazy to think about even if Newton figured it out by himself while home during the plague outbreak.

Here’s a really cool comparison of the orbits of Apollo 8, Artemis 1 and Artemis 2. I didn’t know the moon’s orbit was that complex.



Also found out my cousin who just graduated from University of Florida with a mechanical engineering degree got a job at Lockheed… fortunately in the space division and not the bombing civilians division. Her team is working on the toilet design for Artemis 3, so they’ve been pretty busy the last week!

So Artemis will be in a communications black out when they are behind the moon for about 40 minutes.

The run time of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the moon is about 40 minutes.

Coincidence, I think not.

11 parachutes is a bunch. Also hitting the ocean at 20 mph is not nothing.

Basically like falling off a one story building- would take 15 feet or so to reach 20 mph. Hope those seats are padded.

And in addition to that final bump, they’ll be decelerating hard- I read that they’ll re-enter somewhere near Hawaii and splash down off of San Diego… 13 minutes later.

Definitely one of the scariest parts of the mission. They are coming in HOT.

I did text my dad’s side of the family- many longtime NASA/Boeing/Lockheed engineers- that it was really cool that we just went to the moon for the first time.
