New Anti-Israel Protest at UNC?

Easy solution. Next time this happens, arrest, charge, and expel every single person involved. Having a bunch of pro-Hamas protesters interrupting a Jewish studies class, screaming at students and destroying university property should not be tolerated on any campus. Thankfully I don't think Lee Robers is going to mess around with these clowns.

most are not students at UNC - outsiders. The woman mentioned in the WRAL article has been interviewed before and is an App State grad student.

We live about 2 minutes from the VCU campus in Richmond, and there are pro Palestine protest frequently. For the most part, they’re civil with no escalation or property damage.

But my question has been why? Last time I checked, state universities don’t have much influence on foreign policy. Take it to D.C. or at a minimum, state government in Richmond, Raleigh, etc.

Part of their protest is to have UNC divest itself of any Israeli investments or business interactions. You can agree/disagree, but that's a legit protest. That's fine, but the vandalism is criminal. Meanwhile, we never heard from these folks to divest from any Saudi investments after Khashoggi was butchered, nor when al-Assad ethnically cleansed multiple areas. Seems there's something more to it?

Agree on the divest now protests. We had divest from South Africa protests regularly when I was at UNC in the 80s and I though they were pretty effective at raising awareness of Apartheid.

There was some minor vandalism at times, too, but I don’t recall Death to UNC or Death to America being part of it.

I would like some more news insight to this.Of course they cover vandalism and course disruption etc It is like covering a big car wreck on the nightly news
But how many of thee folks are Not students-and more specifically a meaningful discussion with some of them on their beliefs/goals.I mean
don't have a problem with a "sentence " of expulsion for violent civil disobedience. But it was barely "violent" and I would like to hear some comments from say a Palistinian or Lebanese student at UNC
Most of all I am disappointed at the University response Why not have some meaningful dialouge-encourage discussion groups >Make it an educational time. Instead its "We don't take down the Murican flag-we gonna get all those that did-we closed down the Y because "liberals " hang out there"
I mean this isn't a Georgia football game

Very little news on this since yesterday. Not in the media. Not on Reddit. Not on this board.

The actions of the protesters are stupid and counterproductive. The Lee Roberts-led administration has worked hard to create a situation where extremism rules the day. Historically UNC has most often worked to defuse and invite educational opportunities. This type of environment, as folks here have noted, is good for the Rightists in many ways. People like Art Pope and Lee Roberts know that. It is what they want. And these thoughtless protesters fall and fall for it.

Like @nycfan I was on campus during Anti-Apartheid, Central America, and CIA recruitment actions. I took part in, and helped plan some. I had this same ‘take’ back then though UNC was a more reasonably operated institution in those days and, again as nycfan asserts, protests mainly remained peaceful and minimal property was damaged.

Khashoggi being murdered was nowhere near the gravity of the situation in Gaza. To even suggest that it's evidence of anti-Semitism because people rally about the destruction of a heavily populated area and deaths of 50K or more and don't rally because Saudi Arabia killed one green card holder -- I mean, seriously? Again, your dissembling puts you well outside the realm of rational discussion.

As for Syria, I mean, really? First, there was no need for BDS because the US and Europe were already against al-Assad. He's an enemy. BDS is borne out of the frustration that Israel remains an ally of the west despite its perceived or alleged crimes. Second, what would divestment from Syria look like? After al-Assad was done killing his citizens, they didn't have much of an economy left. Third, boycotting Syria would hurt the victims, not the perps. Fourth, the conflict in Syria is not a case of civil war without end.

And as far as "seems that there's something more to it," well, yeah. Why do you care? You don't get on every thread and start attacking the House of Saud either. What is it about that situation that inspires you to get involved? Questioning others' motivations in that way for doing the exact same thing you are is pretty gross, really.

Your false equivalences discredit you. Should I expect more of it? Have you opened up a fire hose of bullshit, or are you going to return to reality?

You are better with words than I am Thank you

Easy enough. Work with other UNC system campuses and state government. Defacing state property means automatic and immediate expulsion from any UNC institution as well as revocation of any state issue professional or privilege licenses (including drivers license).

Cooper should do it by Executive Order.

And I say that who thinks the government of Israel is every bit as diabolical and terror driven as Hamas.

SJP is proud to be anti-American, anti-university (a bit ironic, since their largest chapters are all at elite universities) and pro-terrorism. They’ve been banned from many campuses across the country. Not sure why they’re still allowed to operate at UNC.
Pretty sure UNC kicked them off campus after last spring’s pro-Hamas fest.
