This is worth the watch, imo. As a life-long UNC basketball FAN, who's never really been super into their football team, I admit that I'm more excited to see UNC football next year than UNC basketball. That is something that I never thought I'd say, and, quite frankly, has me in a position where I don't know how to process my feelings. (I just don't have confidence in HD/staff at this point, and I'm sad about that.)

Anyways, here's the video:

I think people have lost their minds just casually dropping "Belichick will win a national championship at UNC". Come on folks....this is Carolina football. I think the hype is exciting and it will be a fun ride, but does anyone legitimately think that UNC football is going to sniff a national championship?!?

How do you define "sniff a national championship"?

If Belichick is here for at least 4 seasons, my minimum for his tenure to be a success is 1 ACC championship. And that comes with an automatic CFP birth.

If we make the CFP, we're one of 12 teams with a chance. Does that count as "sniffing"?

I don't think we'll be the favorite, or even among the favorites, for a NC while Belichick is here. But I do think we'll be in the conversation at least once (and hopefully more than that).

So one ACC championship game is your 4 year goal?

That seems reasonable.

Sniff to me means play in the game. No, I do not think UNC will play in a national title game for football.

If that's the definition, I would agree that it's highly unlikely that happens.

But I have a broader view of what "sniffing the NC" means, so I'd say we hopefully get at least a sniff.

This might also change depending on who the BB staff can bring in next year.

If we are still working with JW at center, it's going to be a struggle.

While I'm certainly hoping for the best, my fear is that it will ultimately prove that we have simply replaced one over-the-hill coach who has lost his fire for the game and was content to complacently settle for 6 to 8 win seasons and consistent bowl losses and losses to rivals, with a long-term downward trajectory, with another over-the-hill coach who has lost his fire for the game and sees the UNC job as a way to gracefully move into retirement while surrounding himself with a coaching and administrative staff of buddies who are chosen more for loyalty and memories of bygone glory instead of competency and a hunger to greatly improve the program. In other words, more mediocrity and 6 to 8 win seasons. As I said I definitely hope that's not the case and that Belicheck hits the ground running in recruiting and bringing in a top-notch staff and so on. But I'm still very much in wait-and-see mode until we begin to see the results.

Some of your Mack criticism is fair but he did not consistently lose to rivals. State isn't our only rival. In order, it goes State, Duke, Virginia and Wake. Mack was 2-4 against State, 5-1 against Duke, 3-3 against UVa and 4-1 against Wake, for a total of 14-9 against our rivals. I suspect that would compare favorably to Fedora, Davis and Bunting against those four (although I haven't done the math).

Overall maybe, but losing four in a row against State is not a good look, no matter how it is described. He did own Wake and dook, no doubt, so I'll stand corrected on that one.

So, 14-9 against 4 crappy teams.

With the new level of investment in the program I think winning the ACC within the next 3 seasons and being at least in contention the other seasons is a reasonable baseline goal. Less than that wouldn’t necessarily be surprising since we’re talking about Carolina football, but it would definitely be disappointing.
