NIL (the place for this)

I really haven't looked into this, so I'm not going to pretend to understand how it works or will work in the future. But, I've wondered how the introduction of rev shares will put UNC into the same bracket as the big-time programs of the SEC and Big Ten. I thought, if school A's team is getting x amount of funds through NIL while school B's team is getting y amount of funds, then if both schools get 22 million to fund each them, school A will then have 22 + x and school B will have 22 + y. In essence the rev shares will just raise the floor. I've been told that will not be the case. However, Greg confirmed my thinking, stating that OSU will go from 20 million in NIL to around 35 million in NIL + rev shares next year. So, I don't see how this is going to bound anything above. It will just raise the minimum bound.

Who has named college athletes employees?
The House settlement effectively does. Once a school opts into revenue sharing, it is treating the players as employees - no different from the secretaries or the professors.

I mean, I am sure most universities will try to 1099 the payments rather than W2 them. But that really wasn’t my point. And I bet at least some states (like California) will actually require employee classifications.

It’s all TBD. The clearinghouse is supposed to level the playing field by getting rid of “fake” NIL deals that are disguised play for play. But there is a lot of cynicism that the clearinghouse will be able to do that.

Effectively.

So, athletes currently are not employees.

Exactly. As I said in response to the OP, we have about six more months of the old NIL system. Come July 2025, we will be in a completely new paradigm in college sports.
