We have to pay for everything else.

But you know, I'd probably pay for a weather subscription if they were privatized.
I’m not paying for privatized (read that as commercialized) weather forecasts.

Look at the weather blogs……the more clicks, the more revenue.

Look at radio and TV forecasts. The more hype, the bigger the audience.

Those models showing huge snowfall in Piedmont North Carolina over the course of two separate storms were wrong. Both storms. NOAA’s forecast 10 days out was pretty dead-on…..2-4 days out it was accurate……the “models” were still hyping huge storms.

Realize that all of these ridiculous fabricated reasons for firing scientists you disagree with, or at a minimum, putting burdensome pressure through oversight and red tape -- is happening less than a year since MAGA rejected any oversight or a stronger code of ethics over the filthy corruption and political Trump protection by the SCOTUS .

You gonna pay for your tornado warnings if that's a premium tier service? So all roads should be toll roads? You have to pay the fire department when your house catches on fire? Pay the police to keep your neighborhood safe? Let's privatize all schools since you would probably pay for it for your kids???

The trouble with voters, is you think it's all about you. Not everyone can afford to pay for weather forecasts. Whatever happened to voting for what's best for the country and what's best for everyone? Ronald Reagan was the first I remember asking "are you better off than you were four years ago." That and telling Americans that government wasn't the solution, it was the problem. trump is what you get when Reagan and Putin have a baby. Hell isn't hot enough for those 3.

This isn't all directed at you, because I don't think you're really that kind of person, but I'm tired of this shit.

AccuWeather has been trying to dismantle the NOAA and privatize weather for decades. It should come as no surprise that the executive leadership at AccuWeather has also had a cozy relationship with Trump for years. Just more flagrant corruption from Don the Con.

Most of you that are retired are likely in my boat. I knew kids from Jr High through college that went on to careers in EPA , NIH, NOAA , NSF, State or Federal Atty Gen offices , NASA etc They were all smart motherduckers that did really good stuff. None of them "got rich"

Thanks for that last line, I was starting to worry.

I completely agree that we should work together to take care of society and not simply the individual. Especially with healthcare.

But, you are right, I hear so many republicans talking about how everything relates to them. They never look at the bigger picture.

These are the people against student loan aid because they paid off their student loans. They're against paternity leave because it wasn't available when they had kids. (I do joke that my company owes me 24 weeks of paternity leave.) These are the people talking about how THEIR tax dollars are spent, not thinking that the $10K they pay in federal income taxes is .000000000001% of the budget. (I didn't count the zeros, so I may be off a little).

Again, I understand your rant and I completely agree.

I wish that I knew how to make people understand how much more we could achieve working together for the common good.

The post was really just off the cuff because I see enough value in the weather service to pay for it if I had to.

Who needs meteorologists in Tornado Alley?
All those deep red states in tornado alley are really going to get what they voted for this time. Maybe Trump 2.0 will just privatize the weather service and states and cities and towns that can afford it can pay through the nose for what they now get for free. Winning!

You couldn’t be more correct. Tornado Alley has been shifting east due to climate change. I have three cousins who grew up in Kansas City. They were constantly having tornado drills when they were in school because of the frequency of tornadoes where they lived. The tornadoes are now hitting Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky more than the Midwest. If the functions of NOAA are privatized, then those people in the above listed states are going to pay a high price for their support of the Orange Turd. I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see how it’s not going to happen.

AccuWeather sucks. You're better off with a Ouija board.

“The Trump administration is starting another round of job cuts — this one more than 1,000 — at the nation’s weather, ocean and fisheries agency, four people familiar with the matter tell The Associated Press.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Tuesday began plans to lay off 10% of its current workforce, people inside and outside the agency said, with some of them requesting anonymity due to fear of retribution. The numbers were presented to NOAA employees and managers were asked to submit names of positions for layoffs to agency headquarters, which will then go to NOAA’s parent agency, the Department of Commerce, on Wednesday, the people said.

Three former senior NOAA officials — two former political appointees from the Biden administration — who speak regularly with managers at their old agency used the same number for upcoming job cuts: 1,029, 10% of the current 10,290. They talked to multiple people still in NOAA and a current agency worker detailed the cuts that a manager explained to employees.

… While most people know about NOAA and its daily weather forecasts, the agency also monitors and warns about hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and tsunamis, manages the country’s fisheries, runs marine sanctuaries, provides navigation information to ships and observes changes in the climate and oceans. The agency also plays a role in warning about avalanches and space weather that could damage the electrical grid. It helps respond to disasters, including oil spills. …”
