If that was the late 70s/early80s, I might have one of the culprits smoking cigarettes in there, and drinking Budweisers with my salt & pepper catfish. We went there a lot when I was a kid. Amazing fried shrimp. The cigarette smoke was unbearable but still worth it.
Wish I had heard about that.A couple of months ago, Wilber's had a "pop-up" in Charlotte. My sister-in-law went to the "pop-up" they had in Raleigh and let me know there would be one in Charlotte. The "pop-up" was in someome's driveway in Myers Park. Wasn't as good as the restaurant, but much more convenient.
Several times a year in Wilmington that I'm sure of.Your son referees fencing tournaments in eastern NC?
I always celebrate October 23 with barbecued pork ribs and baked apples in honor of the world's creation which apparently happened at 9:30 AM in 4004 BC.hogs are nasty ass animals, but so are we
think i'll have some q today fuck all those idiotic religions that forbid the partaking
For several years my office was down the side street beside Captain Stanleys. We called it stinky Stanley's. When the wind came in our direction...If we are talking fish camps, in my opinion ain’t nothing beating Calabash, NC.
Outside of that, my two favorite places are Captain Stanley’s in SW Raleigh off 401 an and the Sandpiper in Lumberton (@heel79 knows!).
There ain't no fish camps in Calabash.....those are restaurants. Even the old school places are way too fancy to be a mill town fish camp.If we are talking fish camps, in my opinion ain’t nothing beating Calabash, NC.

Alright alright fair enough!!There ain't no fish camps in Calabash.....those are restaurants. Even the old school places are way too fancy to be a mill town fish camp.
Oh man, you gotta get over to Das BBQ in west Midtown for some truly elite Texas-style brisket! It's about as good as you can possibly get outside of Texas, IMO.The bbq pickings in Ga are limited, as compared to NC. My favs are:
Fox Bros (original Inman Park location). Pulled pork is great. Brisket is Texas level quality. Purists may not like it due to it's non traditional, hipster vibe.
Fresh Air BBQ - Jackson Ga. Traditional no frills joint - since 1929
Southern Soul BBQ - St. Simons
Papa Buck's BBQ - Meter GA. It's my go to stop off I-16 on my way to the beach.
I order a Parker's package shipped to my house for my whole hog/Eastern NC fix once a quarter or so. In the last 20/30 years or so you can find decent bbq pork and Texas style brisket throughout large portions of the country but not Eastern NC bbq. You have to go to Eastern NC or have it shipped to enjoy that style bbq. It's my observation (among my friends and wife) that if you didn't grow up eating it, it is an acquired taste.
I do go to Das and I like it - heck I may pick up some tonight. Another quality ATL brisket place is Nuevo Laredo - a traditional Tex/Mex with out of this world brisket.Oh man, you gotta get over to Das BBQ in west Midtown for some truly elite Texas-style brisket! Did I miss this or have you said it previously- are you originally from eastern NC?
That's awesome! Glad you're a fan of ENC whole hog. Awesome love to hear that you go to Das. Sounds like I need to try Nuevo Laredo next time I'm in town!I do go to Das and I like it - heck I may pick up some tonight. I grew up in Hickory but my grandparents and tons of cousins were/are from Eastern NC so visited there often and consumed it regularly.
From Gastonia so I grew up on fish camps. Linebergers, Twin Tops, Catfish Cove, Captain's Cap, Long Creek, Riverside, etc. I thought they were standard fair wherever you went (hadn't been many places besides Myrtle Beach while growing up), so when I got to Chapel Hill I was genuinely curious as to where all the damn fish camps were.Video draws a direct connection between fish camps and cotton mills. Talks specifically about a place in Gaston County called Lineberger's.

My brother in law used to work as one of the cooks at Riverside. Needless to say before heading back up to the Hill on a Sunday evening, I made a stop and grabbed a couple boxes packed full of that delightful breaded and deep fried glory.
