And yet these racist pricks pile into the local Taqueria for good, cheap food and Margaritas and avail themselves in multiple other ways of the hard work and low cost labor and service contributions that enrich life in these otherwise depressed and depressing failing communities.
True. But unlike Texans, they aren’t used to hearing foreign languages and they don’t like it one bit. Paying taxes to fund ESL programs in their schools really sticks in their craw.

Oh yeah, I was thinking that when I typed this post, and I've seen evidence of that firsthand. I have older relatives who rely on in-house and outside services to stay in their homes, and most of those services are provided by local Latino labor. And in some cases they'll speak warmly of individual Latinos that they've gotten to know personally. But as a group? They want them all gone, and complain about all of the Spanish they now hear in stores and seem convinced that the crime rate in their communities has increased because of Latino gangs and so on. And I fully agree that in some of these dying towns Latino labor and entrepreneurship is one of the few things keeping those places afloat.

Many of these rural counties in the NC foothills and mountains have an increasing Latino population, and they're increasingly visible. Latinos are still a definite minority, but based on the 2020 Census figures it is going up. In Alleghany and Surry Counties Latinos are 12% of the population, in Wilkes it's 7%, in Yadkin it's 12%, in Burke it's 8%, and so on. In most of these counties Latinos now make up at least 5% of the population and in some counties they're now the largest minority, replacing blacks. I've suspected for awhile that one of the reasons many of these places have gone from solidly Republican to overwhelmingly (Trump) Republican is because of the steadily increasing and visible Latino population in these places - lots of local whites have taken notice of the rising percentage of Latinos and don't like it, hence the support in these places for Trump's nativist, xenophobic "get rid of immigrants" policies. Where Republicans once got about 55 to 65 percent of the vote in these counties, they now regularly get 75 to 80%.
Bingo.
It’s ironic too because the influx of Latinos are hired as field hands as cheap labor. Picking apples and what not. And those land owners who hire them on the cheap are all republicans. They get cheap labor and also guarantee their party of choice stays in power all at the same time.

Used to be fun to beat the Hell out of Freedom in football.

Booming Hispanic population in that area now
The Fat Friday series was one for the ages. Those days are gone now. And I’m sure Freedom enjoyed beating the hell out of you too. Of course Freedom now holds a decided advantage over all over East Burke. No way East Burke ever catches up now…!
