I read that there were - nationwide - 23 arrests associated with No Kings protests on Saturday.

22 of them were counter protestors who were at No Kings events in various states and were arrested for offenses as small as refusal to disperse and as serious as driving a car toward a crowd and brandishing a weapon.

And 1 was a 53 year old woman in Alabama who was arrested for public indecency for wearing an inflatable penis costume as part of the protest.

As my sister would say in some manner, don’t mistake Portland for Oregon. Outside of Portland and Eugene Oregon is Alabama or Mississippi without the black population. Lots of white supremacists and Christian nationalists and they are often more extreme because they resent the power of the few cities (ie “other” people) unlike the South where they have all the power.

this woman is well known around here and completely unhinged and has exhibited threatening behavior over a period of years now. she's repeatedly harassed people at outer banks pride events and she also left weird, vaguely threatening things on teachers vehicles at local schools. she also sends crazy emails to all sorts of people - i know she sent one to a bunch of NC arts council employees and she sent one to a local episcopal church here as well.

it is high time that she face some consequences. she needs to be de-radicalized and needs mental health treatment.

Raleigh's protest was in NW Raleigh on Capitol, not too far from 540 from noon - 3. And this happened in NW Raleigh on 540 between 2p and 3p (crews were called at 2:45), coincidence? We drove by it all heading the opposite side. They small fires were littered for miles, obviously intentional.

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Wake County Sheriff's Office is investigating multiple brush fires along I-540 as arson.

The fires closed all lanes of I-540 at Capital Boulevard at one point on Saturday, but they have since reopened.

The fires were reported at several locations along I-540 near Glenwood Avenue, Leesville Road, Creedmoor Road, Falls of Neuse Road, and Capital Boulevard.

I wondered the same thing.

True. But unlike Texans, they aren’t used to hearing foreign languages and they don’t like it one bit. Paying taxes to fund ESL programs in their schools really sticks in their craw.
On this note, our church has had for decades a robust free ESL program for locals nearby. In January we had about 25-30, which is typical. It has since dried up completely due to ICE and we now only have 1 adult who will only do it remotely on zoom.

Same can be said of Atlanta vs Georgia

Yeah, Oregon has a lot of similarities to Pennsylvania. The old saying of Penn being Philly on one side, Pittsburg on the other, and Alabama in between... can be said of Oregon and Portland/ Eugene. Oregon also has a weird history in that a lot of the original settlers were farmers who left border states because they did not want to own slaves but could not compete against those who did... but they also did not want blacks living with them. Oregon had exclusionary laws which made it illegal for black people to live in Oregon until the 14th Amendment invalidated them.

I think outside Portland is more like northern Idaho than anywhere else. And yeah Oregon is the only state that explicitly built white supremacy into its constitution but I don’t think it was ever enforced. It was a hell of a messaging campaign to non whites nevertheless.
