OMB freezes all disbursements / USAID shutdown / GOP begs for exceptions for their states

Many Groups Promised Federal Aid Still Have No Funds and No Answers

Judicial rulings have unfrozen some grants awaited by nonprofits, states and companies, but the reprieve has been uneven and many fear the relief is only temporary.

But Zen assured us Trump said he was going to follow the court orders.

Employees at the General Services Administration (GSA) have been told to sell off 500-plus federal government buildings across the US, sources tell WIRED.

WIRED obtained a complete list of GSA buildings, all of which are designated as “core” or “non-core” assets. Of the more than 1,500 assets identified on the list, over 900 are designated as “core” and are thus protected, for now, from sale. The “core” designation applies to buildings like federal courthouses, border inspection stations, or law enforcement facilities.

...

Many of the federal buildings on the list of non-core real estate are fully occupied, sources tell WIRED. This includes buildings like the Senator Paul Simon Federal Building in Carbondale, Illinois, which houses offices for the Federal Aviation Administration, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Social Security Administration, in addition to offices for Durbin, as well as the Patrick V. McNamara Federal Building in Detroit, Michigan, which also houses numerous agencies. The Trump administration has also touted a return-to-office requirement as a key part of its plan—something made more difficult if government employees don’t have an office to return to.

Everyone must return to working in the office. Also, we are closing the offices.

My agency had previously sold off office space in multiple buildings because it was no longer needed with so many of us working remotely. That's one of the many challenges being faced with the return to office order. This GSA plan will make it even more challenging.

No chaos there
Don't feel too bad My old office -the Admin building housing many of the NC Governors admin type agencies (Jones Street) is now gone
Nothing is being built to replace those offices

Prospective grad students from other countries will be asking a lot of questions that can’t be answered with certainty. There are some ethical issues extending an offer amidst all the chaos, even beyond funding concerns.
Adding this here (also posted on the thread about NIH and NSF funding.)

In the wake of fears about significant reductions in federal funding, Vanderbilt has temporarily paused graduate student admissions. Current graduate students and faculty also raised alarm about research funding, doctoral stipends, visas and career opportunities.

After ceding power of the purse, GOP lawmakers beg Trump team for funds

Republican senators are asking Cabinet secretaries and other Trump officials to let money flow back into their states.

"...Senators have in recent days made the case to Cabinet secretaries and other Trump officials to let money flow back into their states. They are trying to finagle exceptions to President Donald Trump’s sweeping executive orders or cuts made by billionaire Elon Musk’s U.S. DOGE Service that freeze hundreds of billions of dollars, including money for farmers and infrastructure projects. That push comes as the administration has also sought to fire a wide swath of federal employees — some of whom live in red states.

Even as many Republicans praise the ultimate goal of streamlining the federal government, some GOP senators spanning the ideological spectrum from Katie Boyd Britt (Alabama) to Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) have lobbied the Trump administration to reconsider its cuts or pauses to federal grants that support biomedical research and labs, or for programs supporting Native American tribes.

... Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama), a close Trump ally who supports the cuts, said last week that begging for funds may be the new normal, suggesting that lawmakers could lobby Musk to save spending they’ve allocated for their states as he slashes and cancels contracts at agencies.

“If we have to lobby for, ‘Hey wait a minute, what about the bridge in Birmingham?’ or, ‘There’s a bridge in Mobile’ or whatever, I think that could be very possible,” Tuberville told reporters.

... The use of impoundment could create a situation where lawmakers who are in good standing with the Trump administration have a better shot at restoring their funds, posing a potential conflict of interest, experts said. ..."

FAFO. What a bunch of dumbasses.
Not just dumbasses, but spineless, gutless hacks to boot. None of them have the guts to stand up to Dear Leader and Co-President Musk openly, so they're desperately trying to "negotiate" in private to save their own state or district's federal goodies from Musk's meat axe. And they'll fail because Trump and Musk know they're spineless and will likely never openly challenge or oppose them as long as they're terrified of their own base. The dumbassery part is that what they don't seem to realize is that as the pain settles in on their base they'll be the ones who those voters are screaming at, not Dear Leader or Musk.

If they start specifically protecting red states at the expense of blue states, that will cause states to secede and they will have the moral authority to do so. There is no way California and New York, who both contribute significantly to the federal government, would stand by and let that happen.

If that happens the only thing we ask of the US military is to back off.

The Constitution is very clear that Congress, not the President or Executive Branch, controls the power of the purse. All Congressional Republicans need to do is stand up to Trump and insist on reclaiming a power that shouldn't have been ceded to Trump and Musk to start with. And yet we all know that practically none of these Congressional Republicans are going to do shit publicly - they're all terrified of Dear Leader, Musk, and their own voters. So they have no one to blame but themselves, although they'll never admit it. Instead they'll continue to beg for scraps from Trump 2.0 and then try spin whatever they get as them working hard to save their districts and states from the deep cuts that are coming.

And in less-prosperous red states like WV or Mississippi or Alabama or Louisiana or Arkansas it's likely going to be especially devastating, because such a high percentage of people in those states depend on federal programs to get by. For example, wait until rural hospitals and other medical facilities start to close due to lack of federal funding and elderly rural Trumpers are driving 30, 40, or 50 or more miles to the closest hospital.
