On Board Decorum

Well vulgarity is often used as part of humor, so it tracks that something you find vulgar might get laughs from others. The question is whether it's over the top vulgarity based on board consensus (or the powers that be, if they want to get into that).

Personally I would not say that to somebody. I consider it a bit crass for polite conversation. However, I might giggle a bit at its used by somebody else if I thought the target of it was arguing in bad faith and just trying to prevent others from having a meaningful discussion.

I guess to put it another way, if somebody is intentionally being an ass, I tend to give others a bit of leeway in what I think is appropriate vs. over the top. Now if super is the one who said this to you, I'd have to ask you honestly if you were doing something intentionally to provoke it. In general, I find him to be a very polite poster... his Asperger's can certainly make him seem patronizing at times.

But I think anybody who has engaged with him for any period of time realizes that it's a result of the way his brain works... not something he's doing to be mean or to belittle. He honestly wants to share the info his spongelike brain accumulates at a mindboggling rate. He's incapable of seeing the line where it goes from friendly sharing to pedantic mansplaining. He can't help it.

But even when he knows people are making fun of him... he still tries to share what he knows, as he feels that's the best of him he has to offer. Honestly, the constant bullying of him around here for being on the spectrum is IMO far worse than anything he might have said after finally saying enough is enough.

Super tends to be polite when you agree with him. He can be pretty awful when he disagrees with you. And sure, he does the over explaining bit but I'm a little shocked that you didn't see the nastiness. He could be a pretty big bully himself. I think it was reaffirming for him when a lot of people agreed with him. I think the difference is the new board hasn't banned or run off all the people that would push back on him and he's having to adjust.

Very interesting thread. I didn’t post at the ZZL more than a couple of times I think though I go way back on IC. My main gig though was ACCBoards.Com and I know a lot of handles here from those days though sometimes I can’t place personalities.

In particular he seemed triggered by my “stories” so I kind of backed off with them (also figuring that they probably annoyed others as well). I’ve got plenty of outlets after all.

This is a great message board though and as a teacher I am particularly happy for the multiple Devil’s Advocate stances that I am treated to here.

I've seen a few posts on the board that I was sure that was made just to attract attention to the poster. I can understand that when others pile on that it's an irritant but I love it when it gets negative feedback or even better gets totally ignored.
 
I don't curse often. I think I have only cursed once in front of my parents. It usually only happens if I am really upset or mad. I can't stand when people curse all the time in regular conversation.

But I would doubt he would have made the cum guzzler comment. That doesn't seem like his style.

Without commenting on the entirety of your post, I am going to comment on one small part of it, ". . . triggered by my 'stories' so I kind of backed off with them, . . .." Please don't. I always click on a post when I see you have posted in hopes that it will be a story. While my "stories" are overly long, on things no one other than myself cares about, and are poorly written; yours are timely, well written, and usually--by analog--help me understand much bigger issues that I either didn't understand in the past or don't understand in the present. I look forward to your stories because they are well and consisely written, bring insights into past events, and shed light on current events. Whereas my stories are pointless ramblings that are of no conceivable interest to anyone. More often than not when I have finished one of my Dostoevsky length ramblings, I delete it unposted saving everyone the toil of scrolling past my indeterminately long stream of conscience ramblings. Perhaps if there some sort of game with prizes awarded for guessing the number ways I would say the same thing using different phrasing in my next post, my posts might serve a purpose and be entertaining

I like most of those stories too, especially the obscure NC trivia. And if it doesn't grab me in the first paragraph, I just move on. No big deal.

Your post often seem to come more from a contrairian disposition than a position or moral conviction. You seem to take positions to antagonize, so are they your positions or do you enjoy te argument and getting others riled up?

When I first joined the ZZL 20 odd years ago, superiffic was a regular poster then known as Fitzcarraldo. You might remember that name.

When this board began back in the summer, I think super tried to police it a bit to try to keep the content focused on topics interesting to him. He started a passive aggressive thread about "sticking to political topics" when I started the Wordle thread.

FWIW I enjoy your stories, especially the "deep Chatham" stuff as there are many parallels to the "old Cabarrus" memories from my youth.

I recall arguments with Fitz, when I had a slightly different outlook. Once he got frustrated and pointed out all of my grammar and spelling errors. I've been much more conscious of those since.

I never understood why people were so against that but I didn't want to ask. I always thought people just got mad that I was disagreeing with them.

No. I'm not the type of person that would just take a position to antagonize someone, although if my opinion antagonizes someone, I'm not afraid to express it.

I do tend to express my opinions more often when I do disagree with someone just because I think agreeing with someone is mostly pretty boring. There's nothing to discuss if both people agree.

For the record, Super has disagreed with me on occasion, and I have never felt bullied or disrespected.

and for the record I rarely agree with your posts, but I have no problem with them ;)

That is the issue for me. I too enjoy your stories and you considered walking away or posting less because of decorum. Some argue only the trolls are driven away. Clearly not.
