Penile Fractures in NC

This seems like a perfect post for the "Random" thread. As a stand-alone topic it is just silly.

I practiced urology in a busy metropolitan area in NC for 30 years. I saw no more than 10 penile fractures (they require surgical repair) over my career. I have trouble believing these numbers.

What types of activities lead to penile fracture?

Also, what is actually happening? I thought it was filled with blood and therefore no bone fracture.

One of my favorite things about message boards is when you have an odd topic and you somehow end up with a reasonable expert on that subject to post (or a normal subject and someone has a close connection that you wouldn't expect).

Only one type of activity leads to fracture (hint: you must be erect to fracture). There are no bones in the (human) penis. Erection occurs when blood fills the two cylindrical corpora cavernosa (and to a lesser extent the corpus spongiosum). If the erect penis is "bent" too far a tear can occur in the lining of the corpus cavernosa- this is a "fracture" of the penis. If not repaired it may lead to penile curvature of impotence.

So assuming My penis is bent, how do I know whether I need medical attention? Is the pain excruciating and long lasting or is it something I could walk off and risk impotence.
