KANNAPOLIS — Police released details Thursday morning on a Jan. 4 incident in which a police officer shot a suspect who reportedly pulled a gun on the officer. The suspect died two days later in the hospital. According to police, a Kannapolis officer was patrolling North Cannon Boulevard about 10 p.m. when he saw a gray 2001 GMC Yukon being driven by a person the officer knew had and outstanding arrest warrant. The officer stopped the car, and while talking with the driver, recognized that the passenger was also someone with an outstanding warrant. Two additional Kannapolis police officers arrived to help with the stop, and the original officer went around to the passenger side of the car and opened the door to arrest Edgar Maddison Welch of Salisbury. When the officer opened the door, Welch pulled a handgun from his jacket and pointed it in the direction of the officer. That officer and a second officer who was standing at the rear passenger side of the Yukon gave commands for Welch to drop the gun. When he refused, both officers fired their duty weapon at Welch, striking him. Medical assistance was immediately summoned for Welch, and he was transported to Atrium Health Cabarrus for care and treatment. He was later taken to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte where he died on Jan. 6.

The guy didn't comply with Capitol Police 4 years ago and he didn't comply with Kannapolis Police now. Maybe the Capitol Police should have responded to the failure to comply on Jan 6 the way other cops do all over the country when they feel endangered.

Mentally ill felon... With a gun. I'd really love to see us ban an awful lot of guns in this country but the next best thing would be to allow law enforcement to effectively investigate and prosecute the people that get these guns into criminals hands.

Are you sure about that? I don't think he was there on January 6th or at least I could find an article and certainly couldn't find an article about him not complying.

He was released in May 2020, but I can't find anything tying him to J6.

Maybe I'm off base here, but I read Farce's comment as making a comparison to the J6 rioters/insurrectionists being noncompliant and how the police should have reacted to them, not that the Pizzagate guy was part of the insurrection itself.

No. The first sentence makes it sound like the guy didn't comply on January 6th. The second sentence could be more broad and refer to all January 6th protesters

I read it as farce thinks the guy was at J6, but you could be correct.

He reached inside his jacket, pulled a gun, pointed it at an officer and two officers, including the one being threatened with lethal force, gave him a chance to drop the gun before firing.

Where have you seen that he’s mentally ill? I mean, I think he was nuts, but that’s a lifestyle choice for many.

No, that’s just cops being afraid to do their jobs in 2025.
