I'm doubtful that anyone at Perkins Coie is having any indigestion over this. It's obviously unconstitutional. Perkins can probably even collect attorneys' fees for the 15 minutes in court required to get this thing overturned.

This is literally the single biggest breach of First Amendment rights, other than just shutting down all news outlets.
You have a lot more faith in our judicial system than I do. Nobody will step up to stop him. We’re screwed

“… Mr Turnbull lost the prime ministership in a party leadership spill and was not voted out by the public.

He had earlier publicly said the US president was unpredictable and could not be trusted to take military action if Australia was attacked.

Mr Trump has not said whether he will exempt Australia from the tariffs, with a decision expected within days.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his government would continue to engage “constructively” with the Trump administration.

“We are partners with the United States through our free trade agreement, and we’ll continue to advocate for Australia’s national interest,” he told reporters in Lismore ahead of the social media post.

Australia is arguing it should be handed an exemption because it imports more from the US than what it exports, the same successful argument Mr Turnbull used when he was prime minister during Mr Trump’s first term.

The US president’s top economic advisor Kevin Hassett has said he doubted any exceptions would be made. …”

Trump constantly on the lookout for democratic allies to bully ….

This is one area where he's equal opportunity. He'll call anyone stupid. Dems are currently just his favorite target.

“… Beattie, who was fired from his role as a speechwriter during the first Trump administration after CNN’s KFile revealed he attended a conference featuring White nationalists, made a series of attacks over the years against other Republicans, including a number of offensive, homophobic and racistcomments.

Though Beattie left up several of his most inflammatory posts, he does appear to have purged criticism of Rubio from his feed. Beattie deleted tweets suggesting a deep hostility toward Rubio — particularly after the then-senator voted to certify the 2020 election results and condemned the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. One deleted tweet also attacked Rubio for criticizing possible Russian actions in Ukraine.…”

I honestly cannot understand how or why Rubio accepted this SoS job under Trump’s conditions. The lack of self-respect is amazing.

Agreed but OTOH there are so many others who could have this appointment who would be worse. Rubio is probably the least awful cabinet pick.

Stalled Audits and a Skeleton Staff: Inside Trump’s War on the I.R.S.

President Trump is planning to gut the work force while trying to turn the I.R.S. into a more political agency.

"...With Trump administration targeting recent hires across the government, the terminations hit particularly hard in Ms. Crowell’s division, large business and international. Of the more than 7,000 people laid off from the I.R.S. so far, roughly half worked in her department.

As a result, the I.R.S. may struggle even more with its basic mission of collecting taxes. Work-intensive investigations into large businesses and rich Americans could decline, a drop in enforcement that would add to the deficit even as Elon Musk says his team is helping narrow it.

... Firing probationary employees like Ms. Crowell was just the beginning of President Trump’s far-reaching agenda for the I.R.S. The administration is preparing budget cuts and further layoffs that could ultimately force the I.R.S. to shed as much as half of its 100,000-person work force — a drastic reduction that could mean many Americans face less scrutiny, and receive less help, on their taxes. At the same time, Mr. Trump is asserting more political control over an agency that has historically been insulated from changes in leadership at the White House.

... Soon after the election, Mr. Trump chose Billy Long, a former Republican congressman and vocal supporter of the president, to lead the I.R.S. The choice of Mr. Long was unusual. He’d never run a large organization and his only background in tax consisted of pitching small businesses on a fraud-riddled tax credit. And by deciding to replace Daniel Werfel, then the head of I.R.S., years before the end of his term in 2027, Mr. Trump was upending the norm that commissioners of the I.R.S. stay in the role even as a new president comes into office. ..."

This is just one guy but feels like an important escalation of authoritarian policing tactics. Hopefully it is just an isolated incident and maybe there is more to the story than is being reported out so far …

Demonstrators to take over NYC's Federal Plaza after Mahmoud Khalil is arrested by ICE

The Columbia University graduate, who helped organize the school’s pro-Palestinian protests, was detained Saturday night and told that his student visa was being revoked, his attorney said.

Maybe these sorts of protests are exactly what Trump’s team wants to provoke (??)

“… The New York Civil Liberties Union said Khalil's detainment was an "extreme attack on his First Amendment rights."

"Ripping a student from their home, challenging their immigration status, and detaining them solely based on political viewpoint will chill student speech and advocacy across campus," a statement read. "Political speech should never be a basis for punishment, or lead to deportation."

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said Khalil was arrested in coordination with ICE and the State Department "in support of President Trump’s executive orders prohibiting anti-Semitism" and because he "led activities aligned to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization." …”

Likely.

This is precisely the type of broadly unsympathetic person and protest this administration wants as a test case.
