Are you saying pot-stirring by newrepublic (also saw this on Newsweek which I would never link) or by Putin?

I don’t think it makes sense that Putin would stir this pot. This statement makes Trump look bad. Maybe Trump doesn’t care but Russia can’t afford to alienate Trump. That would be a hell of a gamble just to sow discord.

The only way this makes sense is if they actually do have something on Trump.
 
Let’s say Putin is just stirring the pot and has nothing on Trump. In that particular case the pot stirring only makes Trump look guilty of something.

A reasonable person in Trump’s shoes would respond by saying, “To be clear I owe nothing to the Russian government and it would be wise for them to not make statements that leave the impression that I do.”

Trump has leverage because of the Ukrainian war. Maybe it isn’t a lot because there would be a political price to pay for continuing support to Ukraine but none of this seems like a wise move for Russia to make.

Consider Putin also had his state run media run stories containing Melania's nudes this past week. This is nothing more than Putin signaling to the world that Trump is his bitch.

What would allow Putin to treat Trump in this way and get away with it? That is the question, I think the answer is pretty clear (as you point out).

I’m not saying that a Trump presidency is not ominous, I just think this particular statement is Russian pot-stirring with catnip for liberals.

I don’t think this would do it. The goalposts will move. maga operates as a cult, not a principled movement, in any respect. If dear leader does it, it’s fine. This is far closer to a Juan Peron, Kim Jong, or Turkmenbasy scenario.

Putin doesn't have anything on Trump except undying admiration.

Trump idolizes Putin. I think that's a full explanation. MAGA is a hierarchical organization where people at every level are expected to fluff the people above them. Trump just isn't actually at the top of his food chain.

Of course that's most of it. The news story -- well, the story, as it's not news -- is Trump just rolling over. He would never accept that treatment from, say, Justin Trudeau.
