I know there are folks on this board who know more about university finances than I do. @CFordUNC for instance; maybe Calheel or nycfan. It's ironic that as a corporate law professor, I know very little about non-profit corporation law. It's not THAT ironic, because lots of corporate law professors are in the same boat: corporate law just doesn't cover non-profits or the like, but anyway:
Why can't Columbia just get bridge financing to keep it operational while it sues the government over what is clearly an illegal action? If it wasn't illegal on its face, the subsequent letter demanding certain concessions makes the whole thing obviously a targeted attack based on viewpoint discrimination.
I get that the university is scared of losing its funding. But $400M is not really a lot of money. Surely there's $400M of anti-Trump money out there that could be tapped to help thwart Orbanization. Are there rules prohibiting such things? I don't understand why Columbia is acting as if it has no choice.
And if donors are afraid of being targeted, do the financing through a shell non-profit like the conservative groups do. Shield the donor list.
