Rapture is postponed

Jesus said 2 thousand years ago that the Son of Man would come down from the clouds and a new kingdom would be established on earth before his disciples kicked the bucket. ( Matthew 16:28 )

Then you had the revisionists like John who said don't worry that the Son of Man has not returned.

Remember that Jesus really meant that you should count on it happening in a certain period of time.

It could happen anytime...100 AD, 1000 AD, 1860,1960,1970,1980, 2025, 2030,2080, 2121...

That verse in Matthew is interpreted by most biblical scholars as referring to the transfiguration, which follows shortly after this. Literally the very next event. Peter, James and John witnessed Jesus being transfigured from human into divine form. Most do not connect it to his second coming, of which no one can know the time except the Father. Matthew 24:36-44.

But earlier Jesus told his disciples not to regret abandoning their wives and children to follow him because they each will take a throne to rule over the one of 12 tribes of Israel and will be rewarded with not only lots of moola but eternal life as well.

I often wonder what the families of the disciples thought when the disciples schlepped home ...

Disciple: Honey, I'm home :)

Wife: Finally ! I've been working like a dog to keep us surviving after your little trip following your "spiritual" guru

Disciple : but I'm back to pick up my responsibilities that I left behind.

Wife : no worries. Are you ruling over a tribe of Israel, bringing back mega money, and the guarantee of eternal life ?

Disciple : Well, it seems like the Son of Man has put that on hold for now

Wife : So when do we get our just rewards ?

Disciple : I wish I could tell you when, but it's looking like somewhere between tomorrow or never.

Nothing really more aptly sums (heh) up the zero-sum moral nature of Christianity than the notion of God's favs being raptured up out of the mess.

Jesus sent them out to preach without even a change of tunic. Seats in heaven don’t come with a cash reward.

Having heard about the Rapture since I was a kid, I have been convinced for a long time that if such an event were to actually occur that a great many of those who claim to believe in it would be shocked when they were not among those chosen. Any God who would choose people like Franklin Graham or Jerry Falwell, Jr. (or Falwell, Sr. and Pat Robertson and Jimmy Swaggart back in the day) and not take others who are far more worthy is not a god who should be worshipped, imo. I've always felt, based on personal experience, that a good deal of the appeal of the idea of the Rapture for the Religious Right is that they believe it will prove them right about everything and their critics wrong, and they will get to see their enemies (scientists, non-fundamentalists) suffer torment. The bestselling, post-Rapture Left Behind series of books from about 15 to 20 years ago was basically revenge porn for the Religious Right.
