I had measles, mumps, and rubella (which we called German measles back then) when I was a kid. The mumps were particularly miserable. There are old photos of me wherein I look like a chipmunk I’m so swollen. Now all it takes is a couple vaccines and kids don’t have to deal with this shit like I did. I can’t believe parents are this stupid and selfish.
I had them too farce. I have immense sympathy for the children. I have none for the parents.
I remember my mother saying she set in a chair and cried when she heard a vaccine had been developed for polio. I can remember a couple who were friends of my parents. They were older and obviously had money. The reason I say that is because their daughter was in an iron lung from polio and they were able to pay for 24/7 nursing care. I remember seeing her in her lung.
Why people refuse to get their children vaccinated is beyond me:

In case you were wondering

Not surprised, because its West Texas, but anti-vaccine goofiness is some bipartisan nonsense. Asheville had a Chickenpox outbreak a few years back at a school that has the highest vaccination exemption rate and is about as granola as it gets.

Yeah, antivax left caused some outbreaks in California, too, but more and more MAHA and MAGA seem to have merged.

I can believe that Kennedy Lite gets wealthier from the BS he spews about vaccines.

I can believe Trump and President Musk spew such BS.

There are a lot of truly stupid people out there. And a lot of completely brainwashed people (which is not inherently the same group).

Add the two together and there are a lot of folks ready to make terrible, terrible decisions.

“… “We’re following them,” she said at the meeting. “For 21 days, they have to report their symptoms to us. If they don’t report, we’re calling them.”

GNR Public Health and other Georgia health departments have not found anyone with measles outside the initial family.

“It’s just a very labor-intensive kind of process just to, again, make sure that we’re not missing anyone,” Francis-Christian said.

In Gwinnett County, clinicians administered preventive measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations to nine people. If received within three days of exposure, the vaccine can help prevent infections in patients who were never immunized against the disease. Additionally, an infant and a pregnant woman in Gwinnett were treated with antibody medications designed to bolster the immune system against measles. …”

Wasn’t sure if there was a health coverage thread so posting this here.

NC Senate looks to stop expanding health insurances mandates for millions, including state employees

The North Carolina Senate, concerned about rising health care costs, plans to soon vote on a bill that would ban any further expansion of the list of procedures that health insurance must pay for.

The rules wouldn’t apply to many of those who get health insurance through their employers, if they work in the private sector for large companies. But the rules would apply to people on other insurance plans — including from the individual marketplace or some private group plans, as well as the 750,000 government workers, retirees and family members on the State Health Plan.

Well I can tell you already that the State Health Plan has gone significantly downhill since Dale Folwell decided to switch us from BCBS to Aetna this year. Have heard A LOT of people complaining about it too.

What does this likely portend for things like seasonal flu vaccines, Covid vaccines, MMR vaccines, etc.

“We should not be giving Black people the same vaccine schedule that’s given to Whites, because their immune system is better than ours.” —RFK Jr.
He's actually a little bit right. I doubt anybody's done a study on different vaccine schedules between black and white Americans but there have been some pretty compelling studies on the immune systems of blacks and whites including the Pasteur institute.

Black Americans tend to have a stronger immune response than white Americans. That can help them fight off certain diseases but unfortunately autoimmune diseases like lupus are more prevalent in black Americans. Researchers theorize that it's because Europeans interbred with neanderthals before they died out and Africans didn't, And got some of the Neanderthals crummy disease fighting genes.

But this is one of the problems I find with RFK Jr. He reads some things and tends to jump to policy immediately. Maybe we should do different vaccine schedules but it needs to be studied first. On the plus side, advocating for different vaccine schedules is pretty daggum close to advocating for vaccines.

I'll tell you the effects already happening in Louisiana. Health care workers are forbidden from recommending vaccines to their patients - including the flu vaccine. Forbidden. Actively working against public health. Good job republicans.
