Most celebrity deaths don’t get to me but damn, my stomach dropped seeing this. Apparently had complications from cancer.

The man was in excellent shape for 78 too. Just saw him perform for GD60 at Golden Gate Park back in August and thought he looked and sounded pretty good. Silver lining is that he was able to go out while still being able to deliver excellent performances in front of massive audiences. What a life well lived. Fare thee well Bobby! We’ll see ya down the road.

For a semester in the Dorm I had a room mate from Buffalo with a huge record collection
Yea-mostly we listened to the Dead. Yea we "partook" a lot

The entire jam band scene owes its existence to the Dead. My wife had never heard them before we got together, now she knows the catalog far better than I.

End of an era in so many ways, even with Jerry dying in 1995. It's kinda like we had this lifeline since then, but the original innovators are now in the Heavens.

Especially shitty when we truly need peace and love (and resistance to all the hate that is so prevalent), very much a kick in the nuts at this moment in time

One of the coolest things about the Dead is that the surviving members did an excellent job of keeping the music alive post Jerry. I was 8 when he passed so never saw them in their original form, but I’ve been to many many shows by different iterations/lineups of Billy/Mickey/Phil/Bob starting in my college years, and that’s how I (and a bunch of my friends that are around the same age) got into the band.

I know the two drummers are still alive but Bob passing is definitely the end of an era in so many ways. I would imagine this almost certainly means the end of Mayer/D&C, but we’re fortunate to have so many great tribute acts still going. The music never stopped!
 
I never got to see the Grateful Dead in concert but I did get to see Dead and Company the last time they played in Raleigh and it was a hell of a show - RIP to a legend
 
Saw the Dead about a dozen or so times back in the day. Still the most unique concerts I've ever been to. As always youth is wasted on the young. I had only mild appreciation for what I experienced. This is one of those events where you really wish you could turn back the clock.
