Interesting that he and Ron Howard were both sitcom stars in the 1970s who went on to become very successful movie directors. And one of Reiner’s early roles was actually a bit part in The Andy Griffith Show. They both also directed movies starring Tom Cruise that came out the same year (Far and Away and A Few Good Men in 1992).

Rob Reiner was also previously married to Penny Marshall, whose big break came when she got a guest starring role in Happy Days as Laverne, who was going out on a double date that included Ron Howard’s character Richie.

Damn. I'm just old enough to barely remember watching him as "Meathead" on All in the Family, and then watched as he emerged as one of the best directors of his generation - A Few Good Men, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, This is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, The American President, and others. He was the son of legendary comedy producer and writer Carl Reiner, who created and produced The Dick Van Dyke Show. More sad news in a weekend of tragedy. RIP.

Just brutal. And he seemed like one of the ultimate nice-guys of Hollywood. Huge loss.

I’d say Meathead as a character and as a generational and sociopolitical foil to Archie is his biggest contribution to the entertainment landscape. No small thanks to the legendary Norman Lear.

Compared to Princess Bride or Stand By Me? Or Spinal Tap. Nobody watches All In the Family anymore.

"All in the Family" was the first program to genuinely reckon with the cultural upheaval of 1960s America. TV would never be the same.

Any number of articles and documentaries saying the same thing as that one.

People may not watch All in the Family, but every show they watch that involves racism, women’s rights and feminism, homosexuality, class struggles, the political climate, et al… owes an immeasurable debt to it.

I think Reiner movies probably have more quotes that have entered into the zeitgeist and are more memorable today. All in the family made a bigger change to entertainment at the time than any of Reiner's movies.

My point is, and framing it differently this time — if you remove All in the Family from the entertainment landscape like it never happened, or you remove all of the movies he ever directed combined, the loss of All in the Family would be a much greater loss to the entertainment landscape.

To reduce it to which had a greater number of memorable quotes or which is more rewatchable is missing the point IMO.

It is widely considered the most important, influential, trailblazing tv show of all time… and Meathead was indispensable to the dynamic that gave the show its sparks. There was no Archie without Meathead.

Until the information about the son, i really feared it was because of his politics.
