Now they'll induct him in July 2025.
You think?

I think it’ll take a major reconsideration of gambling by MLB and the HOF - including the 1919 White Sox - before that happens and I don’t see it happening that fast.

I believe if they were ever going to do it, then it would be when he could not enjoy it.
I agree it was probably off the table until Rose passed. I just don’t think it’ll be by 2025.

I do think with the increasing rise in the acceptance and accessibility of gambling, that a reconsideration will happen in the not-too-distant future, maybe within the next decade.

I thought the best chance he had was something happening by 2019 due to the 100 year anniversary of the Black Sox Scandal, but when that came and went I assumed it’d be awhile.

Agreed.

With that in mind, now that he has passed, MLB should do the right thing and honor him by putting him in the Hall of Fame.
I completely agree . . ! Though I was all for his exclusion while he was alive . .
He was a great wallpaper, he loved the game but, violated a big Cardinal rule and made it even worse by denying it all.

He was a big part of a magnificently talented team . . so many stars on that 1970 squad.

Great player.
Bigger than life persona.
Not a good person.
"Not a good person"? Seriously, please explain. Other than that "terrible sin" of gambling, how was he not a good person. I really don't know much about his character otherwise.

I was a huge Pete Rose fan growing up. Poster on my wall. Other Rose memorabilia. He bet on games that he could impact the outcome.

Rose not only cheated on baseball, he cheated on his wives, had a child that he didn't acknowledge until she was 18, used performance enhancing drugs, and was credibly accused of statutory rape.

Pete Rose was dead to me a long time ago.

Some of the other things:
-Cheated on his taxes and went to prison for it.
-May have boinked a 14 year old when he was 32. Rose claimed she was 16 and he was 34 which would have been legal.
-Maybe financed a big coke deal.

The gambling was a very big deal. You don't want players or managers getting into hock with the bookies because they may be forced to throw the game. After getting found out, the best thing Rose did for the game was get railed with that lifetime ban. Other players saw that and didn't gamble on baseball for fear of a draconian punishment. If they would do that to the lifetime hits leader, they will do it to anyone. We haven't had a case since he was caught.

And honestly, he's overrated. He had one elite skill, hitting singles/for average. He just played forever. Advanced stats do not look on him that kindly (OPS+ is 118 dragged down by nearly a decade of bad results as he hung on trying to get to Cobb's record).

Here is an article from ESPN in 2015 talking about Rose as an actual baseball player. An all-star caliber player who was rarely one of the best players.

At the end of the article, there is a question of who would you take, Rose or Jeter. They had similar WAR numbers (79.1 Rose to 71.8 Jeter). The writer choose Jeter. Not only would I take Jeter, I'm old enough to not only have meet Rose when he was a player but watched much of his career as a Cubs fan, I would put Sosa in the HoF long before I would put Rose there.

I think I'd take prime Rose above prime Jeter but I do think Rose is a bit overrated. This article kind of downplays Rose's hitting by pointing out his power and defense were poor but hitting singles as a leadoff guy is pretty daggum important. Rose did win three batting titles.
