RIP Pope Francis

From the NYT link:

“… Pope Francis, who rose from modest means in Argentina to become the first Jesuit and Latin American pontiff, who clashed bitterly with traditionalists in his push for a more inclusive Roman Catholic Church, and who spoke out tirelessly for migrants, the marginalized and the health of the planet, died on Monday at the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta. He was 88.

… His insistence on shaking up the status quo earned him no shortage of enemies. He demoted conservatives in Vatican offices, restricted the use of the old Latin Mass dear to traditionalists, opened influential meetings of bishops to laypeople, including women, allowed priests to bless same-sex couples and made clear that transgender people could be godparents and that their children could be baptized.

… He also refused to endorse calls to deny communion to Catholic politicians supportive of abortion rights, including when he was president, Joseph R. Biden Jr., who said Francis had called him a “good Catholic.”

… But Francis also disappointed many liberals, who hoped that he might introduce progressive policies. His openness to frank discussion gave oxygen to debates about long-taboo subjects, including priestly celibacy, communion for divorced and remarried people, and greater roles for women in the church. While he opened doors to talking about such issues, he tended to balk at making major decisions. …”

Rip Pope Francis

Guy went out burning it at both ends. Doctors told him to slow down and Easter Sunday he met Vance, gave a brief blessing from the balcony, rode around in the crowds in the Pope mobile, stopped to bless a newborn, and died the next day.

Most of the people that I knew that have died have been in horrible shape on their deathbed for a week or so.

This might belong in the Vance thread if you get my drift.

Pope Francis has been known to speak out against what he sees as a passive and apathetic attitude, often using the metaphor of "couch potatoes" to describe young people who are glued to screens and neglecting their responsibility to make a difference in the world. He has urged young people to "get off the sofa" and engage in activism and service.

Anybody see the movie "Conclave" recently? It was a pretty good movie.
They'll go through that scenario in real time in a little over 2 or 3 weeks.

Excellent movie, and at least a bit underrated. A good time to rewatch it.

And I’m sure the machinations have been ongoing and probably picked up quite a bit during Pope Francis’ illness. I just hope the pendulum doesn’t swing back the other way, which I’m thinking it might.

Hope they don't go back to naming a hard conservative as the next pope.
What I know about the inner workings of the Catholic Church fits in a thimble.

But that's my expectation. Maybe not a "hard conservative" but I think there was a lot of opposition in the Vatican to Francis. IIRC, the reason he was selected was that he was the compromise choice who was predicted to just sort of hold the line and that's not what happened.
