RIP Rodney Rogers

Dang, that sucks.

He was an amazing player and he earned the highest compliment I can give a non-Tar Heel…I hated his guts when we played Wake. You knew he was going to bring it and he would make a victory, if you got it, very difficult.

RIP, Rodney Rogers.

Great player ...
I didn't hate his guts, but I wished he had decided to play for UNC.

Was he recruited by Dean?
Not heavily. He was never offered a scholarship. There were serious questions about whether he would qualify academically (and keep in mind, just two years prior, UNC recruit Kenny Williams did not qualify so never ended up on campus).

Dean also brought in a monster recruiting class that year: Montross, Rozier, Phelps, Reese, Sullivan.

Yeah, it's hard to argue with those results. That may be one of the greatest classes of all time (pre-OAD era).
It’s kinda like those times where people say that they wish Roy had recruited Steph Curry. Well, that year, Roy brought in the class of Wright, Lawson, Ellington, Thompson, Stepheson, and Graves. And of course, unlike Rogers, Curry was not a highly regarded recruit out of high school.

We attended a funeral today for the son of a friend of ours. He suffered a spinal cord injury in high school. He was 54. People who suffer those kind of injuries just don’t live to be real old.

Yeah, but would it have really hurt us to have taken him over Graves? I think not.

I'd argue the most significant Deac, moreso than Childress, Duncan, and Paul. Brought them back from the wilderness.

Used to play pickup with a guy who was a State fan, and somehow had managed to collect replica NBA jerseys from all the obscure State guys who played pro. For example, dude would wear his Tom Gugliotta Suns jersey.

Well, ten years or so ago when Rogers had his accident, my man wore his Rogers Denver Nuggets jersey as kinda a quiet tribute. He's probably rocking it again today. Even the NCSU folks appreciate Rodney.

My understanding is that Graves, who was perhaps the earliest commit in the class, did a lot to help recruit some of those other guys to UNC. So without Graves maybe we don’t get some of the others.

I think all the players really liked Graves. He had the best weed.

That makes him okay in book . .

My post was not serious in any real way. 🤷‍♂️

I recall RR as a fine player, but knew nothing of his injury.
Just read his Wikipedia page. My goodness, he and his family have had a lot of tough times

And also had George Lynch from Rodney's class

WS native here, so as anyone who grew up here, there's a SMALL affinity for WFU. Rodney was loved by pretty much everyone. Good luck finding anyone with a bad word about the man. Lots of Wake friends are pretty upset today.

I had a high school friend who had a spinal cord injury from a gymnastics accident in college. His father was an MD and he received excellent care. He never saw 40.
