Roll Call: Who is voting early? Who is waiting til Nov. 5 (and why?)

So I evacuated WNC for NYC because of Helene on Oct. 1. At first I wasn't sure whether I would return to AVL so I waited until Oct. 20 to request my absentee ballot. It did not arrive in NYC until yesterday, Nov. 2 late in the day (mail comes to our building around 4 pm).

Not being able to mail it on Sunday, Nov. 3, instead I hit the road at 5 am this morning, arriving back in Buncombe 12 hours later. I have my absentee ballot with me. The protocol that I must follow now is to turn it in on Election Day by 7:30 at the Board of Elections office (I cannot take it to my designated polling place nor can I do anything with it tomorrow/Monday).

Fifteen years ago when my Deddy was in hospice and in his last days he said to me, "You cannot ever miss voting. You have to cancel your brother."

My intention is to always honor his wishes.

A friend has suggested that a vote like mine will surely be contested should Harris win.

Last house we canvassed yesterday we knocked, thought we heard some movement inside so knocked again. A guy yelled through a curtained window, “I’ve already voted!”. So I replied, “Thanks”, and we started to walk away. Suddenly the garage door started to open and I heard a “Wait!” The guy must have noticed our Harris/Walz shirts after first thinking we must be Trump canvassers.

The guy said he actually had not voted yet, had not changed his registration from his home in Pennsylvania yet, and was flying back to PA this morning to vote straight D. We shook his hand and gave him our thanks. The organizer loved it when we passed on this story.

For those voting tomorrow, what's your plan? The husband and I will probably go around 9 a.m. Guilford County Schools are closed today and tomorrow, so I want to drag our 14-year-old out so he can witness democracy in action and all of that. But he'll probably still be asleep. :ROFLMAO:

I'm working, so we'll probably swing by Starbuck's and then come back home to log on and try to focus. I did take Wednesday off for...whatever is happening.

LOL

Text that I just received: "Message from NC Board of Elections: If you have not yet returned your absentee ballot or voted in person, do not mail your ballot at this point. Because it must arrive by 7:30PM on Tuesday, November 5, you must deliver it by hand to your county board of elections office. You may instead discard your absentee ballot and vote in-person at your polling location between 6:30AM and 7:30PM - find your site at Voter Search. Disregard this message if you already returned your ballot or voted in person. These rules don't apply to military and citizens abroad returning absentee ballots."

If you followed the instructions you received by text, then they can contest it all they want. They ain't gonna win. Save the text, though.

Also, I can't imagine what would be wrong with what you did. You lawfully requested a ballot; it didn't arrive on time (which is the fault in part of the NC Supreme Court); and you returned it as per instructions. And since you were displaced by Helene, I'm quite skeptical that there will be much appetite by any decision maker to invalidate you.

Just had my 2nd visit in 3 days by people canvassing for Harris. That makes 3 times in my entire life and I've been voting for 25 years. Her ground game is strong!

I do think I scared the first canvasser, a young black woman, when I told her she didn't have to waste her time with her pitch. I think she thought some idiotic MAGA rant was incoming. A look of relief washed over her face when I told her whole house was in the bag for Harris. Was pretty funny.

Had a phone call yesterday from a lady calling from Washington State. I said "I can save you the time. Straight D all the way and since we are a gay couple I mean that in every way possible." She laughed until she choked and said she needed that. I thanked her for her efforts.
