SATIRE - Chancellor Roberts Guts The Daily Tar Heel

I want to laugh but at a time when satire is rampant on social media and so many people lacking critical skills and looking for affirmation lap it up, not sure I think it's a good idea to follow along. But I'm old school newsman.

Maybe on April 1.

Yeah, the DTH has been independently funded since some time before I was in the school in the 90s. At some point in the last 20 years they moved of campus so they didn't rely on UNC in anyway and could be even more independent.

I don't quite get the mechanism. They are proudly independant They make ad money with their very large circulation , which is based on them being free. I know you can subscribe for their electronic paper-but its still free if you don't
I guess the "charter" still gives the Chancellor the power
i am sure we will read about it

Lord I finally read the OP
The University bought the DTH a few weeks ago

"About The Daily Tar Heel

Printing news. Raising hell. Since 1893.

The Daily Tar Heel is the independent student newspaper at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The DTH has been serving the University and surrounding community since its founding on Feb. 23, 1893. The nonprofit media corporation, which was incorporated in 1989 as a separate legal entity from UNC, stopped taking student fees in 1993 and has since been funded by advertising revenue, thus making it both fiscally and editorially independent.

All DTH news is completely free, both in print and online. The paper circulates 10,000 free copies each Wednesday during the regular academic year to about 200 distribution locations throughout campus, Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Chatham and Durham — making it the largest community newspaper in the area. It publishes a handful of editions during the summer sessions. The website, dailytarheel.com, draws 40,000 readers (unique visitors) on average per school day.

Student journalists are solely responsible for all content under the direction of the student editor-in-chief, selected each April by an independent 11-member selection board generated by the board of directors for just that purpose. The editor-in-chief serves as the public face of the paper and oversees the newsroom operations and is ultimately responsible for all news and opinion content. The editor also hires the rest of the newsroom staff, which includes the print managing editor, digital managing editor, community engagement managing editor, DEI coordinator and each of the desk editors.

The Daily Tar Heel Media Corporation

The newsroom is just one arm of The Daily Tar Heel Media Corporation.

DTH Media Corp. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that is funded through a mix of earned revenue and dedicated support from alumni, readers and friends. The DTH has two primary revenue teams: the advertising staff and the in-house marketing agency 1893 Brand Studio. DTH Media Corp. also employs three full-time or part-time professionals: Executive Director Will Lingo, Bookkeeper Sarah Ederle and Advertising Director Megan McGinity.

But otherwise, the newsroom, the ad staff and the brand studio are 100% UNC student-run, with the newsroom alone being staffed by more than 300 student journalists.

The paper's business operations are governed by a 13-member, student-majority board of directors whose open slots are filled by the board each winter for the next year."
