Donald Trump posted an illustration that portrayed himself as Jesus Christ. How can any America still stand with him after this? Yet, the Right Wing still champions Donald Trump as the "Great Savior" of the Caucasian Race. I don't see a path back to normality after the Trump era of American Politics. I hope I don't live long enough to be sent to the Gulag.

Maybe it's just semantics but doesn't it seem ridiculous to ,in one breath talk about God's omnipresence and ,in another, his second coming? It's by no means the most absurd idea they have, but how long must they be such a farrago of self serving theology?

I get what you're saying, but it's not even the Second Coming that is so telling about the Religious Right in this country - most Christian churches (including non-conservative ones) accept the idea of the Second Coming. It's the Evangelical idea of the Rapture that is so ridiculous, imo. My understanding is that the Rapture is supposed to be a separate event from the Second Coming and the idea of it is not accepted by most Christians worldwide - it's more of an Evangelical/Fundamentalist thing and is a fairly recent idea in Christianity.

As you noted, talking about God being everywhere but then also that he's "coming back" is self-serving, but in general terms the idea that Jesus will suddenly return to "rapture" all of his loyal followers (or, right-wing fundie Christians only) up into heaven so they don't have to suffer under the rule of the Antichrist and End of Days is about as self-serving as you can get. The whole rapture/end of days/antichrist/tribulation period story is really a kind of revenge fantasy where they will be proven right about everything and their opponents wrong. And many fundamentalists believe that non-fundie Christians will not be raptured - for example Catholics won't be taken, including the Pope. Only Christians who believe exactly as they do will be worthy and faithful enough to be taken.

The idea that people like Franklin Graham, Jerry Falwell, Jr., Joel Osteen, Pete Hegseth, Stephen Miller and their ilk are going to be called up into heaven and far better people morally and in every other way will be "left behind" to suffer a horrible fate is absurd. And all because they have publicly expressed their belief that Jesus is the Son of God, and not because they've lived a moral life or are a decent human being. It's like the old Onion article where the Rapture happens and fundie leaders like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson are interviewed before they head up to heaven ("So long, suckers!"), and one televangelist says that in heaven there will be a "shared hatred of gays." I was raised to believe in the Rapture, but find the Evangelical notion of it as taught in many churches to be very self-serving, egotistical, and ridiculous.

I was raised in that tradition as well. Unfortunately, I was such a good reader and terrible listener that I learned to think instead of follow. Never been very content since.
