Trump’s Speech on Economy Veers Into an Anti-Immigrant Tirade

President Trump vacillated between demonizing immigrants and assuring a crowd of his supporters that life was better than ever under his administration.

“… During his xenophobic tirade, Mr. Trump made little distinction between unauthorized migrants and those who followed all the correct procedures to enter the country and eventually become American citizens. He described Somali immigrants as lazy, murderous and “garbage,” and said the home countries of many immigrants were “filthy, dirty, disgusting.”

He singled out Representative Ilhan Omar, Democrat of Minnesota, referring to her hijab as “the little turban.” He again called for her to be deported, and the crowd responded by chanting, “Send her back.”

“She comes in, does nothing but bitch,” Mr. Trump said. “She is always complaining. She comes from her country where, I mean it’s considered about the worst country in the world.”“

This is Trump’s political problem in a nutshell. His base, to whom he clings, cares far more about xenophobia than affordability. But the rest of the country cares deeply about affordability and either doesn’t care about or despises Trump’s xenophobia. If he keeps doing events like this, his approval rating will continue to decline. He — and these hardcore MAGA enablers — are just completely out of touch.

The entire MAGA movement is disgusting. These people are the true definition of ugly Americans. Bigots! Racists! Xenophobic! Fake ass Christians! Just disgusting human beings. 🤮
Starting with the success of the civil rights movement in the 60s the GOP very successfully drove out and utterly destroyed its moderate wing - first the Eastern Establishment Rockefeller Republicans were driven out of the party, then right-of-center types like the Bob Doles and Howard Bakers (in 1996 Bob Dole told Barry Goldwater something to the effect of "can you believe that we're the moderates now?" in the party), and finally they've even driven out hard-right types like Lynne Cheney who wouldn't bend the knee to Dear Leader.

And while that long-term purge was going on, the GOP also over the decades has managed to bring together most of the very worst elements of American life and society into a single political party and coalition. Think of some of the worst social and cultural and religious and economic groups you've read about in American history over the generations and put them all into one political party and give them total control of the government and this is what we have today.
