Honestly it cannot be said often enough just how bad boomers writ large have turned out to be for the country and the world. I get that there are huge numbers of them who are wonderful people, but the majority absolutely fucking suck.

Oh and they can get over being criticized too because they have never had an issue criticizing every generation after them and every generation before them. Boomers made a cottage industry of thinking and saying that that their parents' generation, their children's generation and their geandchildrens's generations are all shit.
I received my AARP Bulletin a few days ago which is one of the luxuries I enjoy because I am a Boomer who can afford the membership fee.
It reported on a study that was done which found 39 million elder Boomers were living in poverty or near poverty.

I would be interested to know how many of those are assholes who absolutely fucking suck.

I haven't seen a similar study tracking the 25-50 yo cohort who are living in poverty. Would your guess be it is more than 39 million or less than 39 million ? And of those who are living in poverty how many are likely to be assholes who absolutely fucking suck.

TRUMP: No. If they do they do. If that happened, there'd be big retaliation on our part, & we have all the cards

You have to wonder how many of them ever had them or their friends forced to fight wars they didn't believe in or saw their contemporaries shot and killed on campus by the National Guard or beaten in the streets by the police for protesting against racism, sexism and other social injustices. If you think WASPs have their thumbs on the scale now, you should have tried the 60s.

Hell no, we weren't perfect but a damned lot of us put a lot on the line to establish a beach head against some serious resistance. The thing is, there wasn't enough of us and too damned many people got old and complacent and settled. Where did your generations pick it up again?

The Greatest Generation grew up during the Great Depression and defeated fascism in WWII coupled with a firm resistance to civil rights for " Negroes " and equal rights for women. Their experience growing up in a depression impacted future Boomers with the message that we should not expect any assistance from them once we became adults.

I submit that many Boomers reacted to the lack of financial support ( and emotional support ) by raising a generation that would be showered love and an expectation that they should be entitled to a lifestyle greater than ours.

Given the political/financial landscape over the last 25 years we have been unable to fulfill our promise that you would enjoy an easy life in adulthood as you did in childhood.

I am very sad that us Boomers have failed to meet the expectations of the next generations.

With all due respect to every single Boomer poster on this board, it's not that Boomers have failed to meet the expectations of the next generations. It's that Boomers collectively as a generation- or, rather, at least the ones who ultimately gained the most wealth and power- have decided to hoard and never relinquish either one, and have decided to yank up the ladder behind them so that the next generations don't have a snowball's chance in hell of being able to achieve the same or better. That doesn't mean that ALL Boomers are that way, and maybe not even MOST Boomers, but the ones that actually amassed significant power or wealth are absolutely that way. It's why the majority of Congress- both parties- are a bunch of 60, 70, and 80-year-olds trying and failing to meet the moment in a world that has long ago passed them by. It's why we as a collective society are rapidly LOSING the freedoms and individual rights on which this country supposedly prided itself. It's why we as a collective society can't afford healthcare and education and housing. It's why both political parties are beholden to corporate interests. It's why nothing will ever get done about any of the kitchen table issues that are crippling the middle and lower class in this country, because there are always Boomers in Congress beholden to lobbyists and corporations. It is a fact that Millennials, Gen Z'ers, and beyond are going to grow up in a country where they aren't allowed to have their own bodily autonomy, can't afford to have children, and can't afford to own a home in the same way that their parents and grandparents could- because their parents and grandparents in the Boomer generation decided that they need to run Congress at 70, 80, 90 years old instead of hitting the fucking beach or the golf course in retirement.

Our country is crumbling around us because people like Donald Trump, Joe Biden, Chuck Schumer, Chuck Grassley, Nancy Pelosi, Mitch McConnell, Virginia Foxx, Hal Rogers, Jim Clyburn, Bernie Sanders, Angus King, Jim Risch, Dick Durbin don't give a flying fig newton about anything other than hoarding as much wealth and power as possible for as long as possible- i.e., until they mercifully kick the bucket. What possible incentive do any of those people have to actually work hard and fight for the middle class, or the working class, or people in their 20's, 30's, 40's, etc.? None. And it shows.

I don't mean to sound like I'm shitting on all Boomers. That's not my intent. Most Boomers are good, honest, caring people, I am sure of it. The ones on this board are a shining example of such. My point is just that as a political entity, the Boomer generation is collectively screwing the rest of us because of their refusal to ride off into the sunset.

The very oldest Boomers are 79 years old (born in 1946).

Those 80 and 90 year-olds in Congress or State Legislatures or as judges/justices are not and have not been Boomers.

I’m 64; born in 1961. So much of how Boomers are portrayed are people who were born in 1946-1956. My life experiences don’t resemble those of people who were 17-26 from 1963 to 1972.

Ahh gotcha. Well then that it fully my mistake for thinking that the 80-90 year-olds in Congress are classified Boomers, and I apologize for it!

I agree with a lot of what you say but most of those boomer success stories are the sonsabitches we started off fighting and represented the entrenched privileges that so many of us took to the streets against. Remember that they were stronger then than they've ever been since. Fortunately ,then there were a few more leaders on both sides of good character.

It's also not fair to blame the boomers for old corrupt politicians of either side. You have politics to blame for that going back to the twin birth of politics and prostitution sometime in the stone age.

Something I've noticed among people I grew up with in ENC and something I wonder is a shared experience with others here is that there was a pretty dramatic shift between people who graduated between 1965 high school graduates and 1970 grads. It's like that's when the 60s really started.

Totally valid and great points you make! I am sorry for painting with such broad brushstrokes. Lesson learned!

Let me give you my most sincere apologies for not putting a gun to the side of my head and pulling the trigger the day before I decided to apply for Social Security at age 69. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me.
