I watched an interview about that. Apparently the backflips are pretty easy for skaters, they have just been banned since like 1976.

Look at it this way, if an Iranian athlete said something similar we would applaud it.
We applaud what John Carlos and Timmie Smith did (well, in hindsight we do. At the time, a lot of people didn’t like their gestures or comments at all).
