We continue to see policies by sledgehammer or incineration as MAGA and their allies try to eliminate anything they consider “DEI” or “woke”. I thought it might be useful to collect news items in a single thread.

“…
Trump signed an executive order Monday that rescinded former President Joe Biden’s actions on requiring the executive branch to promote equity.

“The Biden Administration forced illegal and immoral discrimination programs, going by the name ‘diversity, equity, and inclusion’ (DEI), into virtually all aspects of the Federal Government, in areas ranging from airline safety to the military,” the Trump executive order reads.

“This was a concerted effort stemming from President Biden’s first day in office, when he issued Executive Order 13985, ‘Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government,’” Trump's executive action reads.

“Pursuant to Executive Order 13985 and follow-on orders, nearly every Federal agency and entity submitted ‘Equity Action Plans’ to detail the ways that they have furthered DEIs infiltration of the Federal Government,” the order signed Monday reads.

“The public release of these plans demonstrated immense public waste and shameful discrimination. That ends today,” it continued. “Americans deserve a government committed to serving every person with equal dignity and respect, and to expending precious taxpayer resources only on making America great.” …”

“… At some agencies, the drive to remove diversity mentions was creating widespread questions and confusion. Lacking clear guidance, Defense Department staff members were pulling websites down in often inconsistent ways.

The Army, as an example, temporarily removed its sexual assault guidelines — raising questions about what message that might be sending, considering that Trump’s defense nominee Pete Hegseth has been involved in sex assault allegations, which he denies. The guidelines were back up late Thursday.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio sent a cable this week to all U.S. embassies and consulates abroad barring them from flying anything other than the American flag or flags to honor prisoners of war or the wrongfully detained. The directive effectively banned the display of LGBTQ+ pride or Black Lives Matter flags, which had been permitted under the Biden administration.

On Thursday night, the Education Department announced it had removed or archived hundreds of guidance documents, reports and training materials. The department said it cancelled contracts totaling more than $2.6 million for staff DEI training.

The pages that were taken down include “Resources for LGBTQI+ Students,” an overview of civil rights laws related to “Race, Color, or National Origin Discrimination,” and guidance titled “Avoid the Discriminatory Use of Artificial Intelligence.” …”

I don’t actually oppose a thoughtful correction in DEI programs, and understand that every Administration reorganizes around its policy goals. But the extent to which the Trump Administration is taking a blowtorch to any mention of women or any racial group, like taking down training materials on the Tuskegee Airmen (until pressured to reverse) and eliminating links to mental health resources for LGBTQ youth, is deeply disturbing. They seem to be trying to erase people and their accomplishments.

I don't know how the Trump administration defines woke or DEI, but, like closing down the department website, canceling these clubs sounds like malicious compliance to me. We will see how things shake out.

Couldn’t agree with you more. Absolutely no issue whatsoever- absolutely, positively no problem – with examining and correcting awkward, ineffective corporate DEI programs. In fact, I’d be the biggest cheerleader of such. But that’s not what the right wing is doing. They are wanting to completely eliminate any and all cultural references that are not heterosexual, Caucasian, and Christian. I’m about as white as the driven snow, as straight as an arrow, and as Christian as any failed sinner can be, and the absolute last thing I want in the world is for there to be no celebration of multiculturalism. I truly cannot understand the perspective of anyone who thinks otherwise, and honestly, I’m not really willing to try.

Call it virtue signaling or whatever if you want, but my straightness, my whiteness, and my Christianity are not in any way threatened by the existence and celebration of other cultures, and in fact, they are nothing but enhanced by being exposed to them.

I’m not really sure how any Republicans can defend this, but then again, that’s why I am no longer Republican – because I won’t defend it. It’s just like how they pretend that they care so deeply about protecting the sanctity of sports as it pertains to transgender people participating. They don’t care about that at all, because if they did, they wouldn’t be also trying to make gender affirming healthcare illegal. Same with DEI. They don’t care about clunky corporate DEI programs, because if they did, they would just focus on eliminating or reconfiguring those, instead of literally trying to erase any and all references whatsoever to other culture.

I think we should make a point of having people who object to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion tell us up front which of those so upsets them.

Do they disagree that people unlike them can have valuable contributions to make? Do they not believe in being fair and just in the way people are treated? Do they not want people unlike themselves to be included in public spaces?

Lay it out for us.

And I definitely think we need to define "woke." Because right now it seems to be a catch-all pejorative rather than any kind of useful description of behavior or ideas.

lol at removing a “Be kind to everyone” plaque. What the fuck are we doing here?
That's MAGA in a nutshell. Call yourself a Christian and yet find a phrase like that to be offensive, so you literally force someone else to take down a plaque that has that phrase. The cruelty and ability to force someone else to do that is the whole point. Instead of "be kind to everyone", their philosophy is "be an asshole to everyone, especially those who don't look or believe or act like you do."
