This wouldn't be the first where that was true.

I listened to a show today talking about this and how many people could name the songs of the halftime show going into the show, most can’t
That may be true but Lamar’s songs don’t get much radio pay or exposure unless you are already one of his fans. Top 40 is known as Top 40 for a reason. It is extremely popular and gets tons of airtime. Choosing Lamar would be the equivalent of choosing Tyler Childers. People who love him love him but most people don’t know any of his stuff and it is not likely to resonate with most of the audience.

Prince is still the best Super Bowl halftime show of all time.
He was good.

The 1992 Super Bowl halftime show was titled winter magic, it was a tribute to the winter Olympics. It was far worse than any modern entertainer.

The Nike ad earlier looked good but felt like it borrowed heavily from the Barbie - America Ferrera speech. Homage? Coincidence?

Kendrick Lamar is short.
The Kendrick entry from my favorite Grantland (RIP) article ever (from 2014)..

Kendrick Lamar

End Fight Probability: There is a negative–12 percent chance Kendrick Lamar knocks you out.

Several months ago I was at a concert. I was milling about backstage (I was there to do some reporting for a story). I was waiting for the main act to come on, talking to strangers (and then making fun on them on Twitter like a good Catholic boy), when this kid, couldn’t have been more than 13, hurried past me. I didn’t pay him any attention until I noticed he was headed straight for the stage. He stopped at the edge, was handed a microphone, then walked out and the whole entire universe exploded. It was Kendrick. I’m not a very tall person (5-foot-7) and he was at least two feet shorter. You’d survive this fight.

He's shown up to comment negatively about...

- a conscious black rapper
- an ad about women's sports

Yeah.
I loved Usher and company. I loved Rihanna. I loved The Weeknd. Race has zero to do with it. That show just sucked.
